By Sami NEZA While thousands who have arrived from Kosovo and the family members who have invited them into their homes are on the verge of starvation, the state apparatus, headed by the Ministry of Information, is seeking to silence that part of the media which, in an alarmed voice, is trying to bring at least a little international attention to their aid, in the absence of government assistance. For several days, around 300 thousand people displaced by the terrorist regime of Millosheviç have been in the hands of the generosity of thousands of Albanian families, while thousands more in camps or gathering centers, despite receiving immeasurable care from local authorities, have been forgotten by the government and the ministry that broadcasts over the airwaves to people who need bread. Before dozens upon dozens of reports aimed at destabilizing the Albanian factor are broadcast on state TV, or before government information seeks to engage in a war with Tirana’s or foreign media, it must first think about the lives of the 300 thousand Albanians in its hands, demand accountability and then seek help, and use its reports to bear witness to those who are being groomed amid Albanian suffering and sacrifice in these days. If in the offices of Musa Ulqini or Pandeli Majko things are rosy, in the camps in Tirana, Kukës, Has, Durrës, Elbasan and Korçë, at reception points for arrivals, and in around 30 thousand Albanian families, life is difficult. It is easier for the government media to identify where aid is being stolen and bring the abusers before public opinion and justice than to single out enemies of the Tirana government from among the 500 thousand Albanians whom Millosheviç drove from their native land. The opposition press has neither the means to steal aid, nor to prevent the government from doing its duty in this crisis, nor to blockade Rinas, the port of Durrës, or the airports of Gjadër and Kuçovë; it cannot sell the offices of the Albanians of Gjakova and Peja, or seize travelers’ documents from Kukës at roadblocks. Likewise, the opposition press cannot hire its own police at customs posts to protect the goods, when the Emergency Commission began a war to steal them, or when another independent ogress sorts them: goods for sale and goods for the camps. This press cannot stand guard at Mullat or Linzë, from where dozens upon dozens of tons disappear overnight, until five in the morning. But this press has a duty to be appealing, and the government cannot simply sit back, nor can it distribute aid, nor can it support the people who want to help. This government must not obstruct them, and must have the courage to do such a thing. We do not want Blaca and Gligorov’s situation to be repeated in Tirana, Korçë, Has or Kukës. There is no reason for Albanians, the people making sacrifices, local authorities and those distributing aid to struggle where our government has been paralyzed by a major lack of organization, with incompetent, abusive and corrupt local representatives, with an ist ideology and the official media, or that official and ideologized discourse. Around twenty people have died in Kukës, thousands more are sick and hundreds of infants are still sleeping in [rroje?]; it is hard not to be indifferent to them, as our officials are, so [gëta?]. The Prefecture of Tirana and the others, once again, have done nothing to prepare lists to help the families hosting around 90 thousand arrivals in their homes. The lack of bread on the tables of these families is a great hardship not only for the guests, but for everyone. The government has no right to fail to stand by its citizens, and likewise has no right to trample the dignity of their hosts. Government information is not just the numbers of people who have arrived, but the spirit of the people who have arrived, their lives hanging by a thread—first because of the barbarians of Belgrade, and now because of the central authorities’ indifference.

Berisha’s message to all Orthodox believers on the occasion of Easter From my heart, I wish Orthodox believers in Albania and everywhere in the world, “Happy Easter, and many happy returns!” This blessed day finds Albanians in a suffering, pain, sacrifice and catastrophe unprecedented in the region. But Easter is the day of great hope, of unshakable faith in God, and it invites all people of faith and of every nation to love one another, share and help ease the pain and suffering of Kosovo. Tonight, all together, we will build a shining brotherhood for the nation and before God: the Orthodox Albanians of blessed memory, who were sacrificed by an old inquisition in order to be sanctified and become immortal in our national conscience and the Albanian Autocephalous Church. Noli’s Orthodox Church is for Albanians an eternal sanctuary of harmony, an example of Albanian identity and patriotism, and of brotherhood with other faiths.
