Meidani, just like Milosheviçi, abuses the Democratic League of Kosovo The Albanian Presidency and Rexhep Meidani, Albania’s Socialist President, currently constitute the most divisive factor among the Albanians of Kosovo, as well as one of the elements of the anti-Albanian forces seeking to prevent a resolution of the Kosovo issue. Meidani’s position throughout the period since the beginning of NATO’s bombardments, and afterward, remains the most irresponsible and negative position ever displayed by the structures of the Albanian state. Meidani made the effort to speak about NATO’s attacks only during three intensive days of the Alliance’s operation in total. Even afterward, Meidani did not in any way adhere to the Western European position on the air strikes and the resolution of the conflict. He was the last person to speak in favor of ground troops. And at the height of the war, was he talking about the Balkan marshal, while never saying a single word about the hundreds of thousands of hungry people from Kosovo, thousands of whom were trying to stay alive in open squares throughout Albania? In addition to these positions, Meidani is the most effective conduit for Serbia’s policy in Albania, with his titanic efforts to divide the Albanian political forces. Such a position is expressed not merely through support for Serbian criminals in Kosovo and efforts to bring ideologically close figures to power in postwar Kosovo, but also through the unscrupulous discrimination and deception directed at Kosovo’s political forces. The case of the deception involving statements by LDK representatives is the clearest expression of such a position. Just as Slobodan Milosheviçi, after imprisoning Rugova, tries to use him for his propaganda, Meidani, too, uses—or tried to use—the LDK and Rugova’s people for his own purposes, which coincide with those of Milosheviçi. In the official communiqué issued by his office, he deceived the public in a completely shameless manner, and only the insistence of the members of the LDK delegation led to the wording being changed in the latest news. Even that report was not at all accurate: at its core, it served the Serbian purpose of the Presidency, namely using the LDK according to Meidani’s interests. The Presidency not only failed to apologize for the scandalous fabrication, typical of the “inverviste” and ala Slobodan, but also interpreted the LDK’s goodwill in respecting all Albanian state and political forces according to the President’s malicious aims. Through their positions and actions, the Presidency and the President have publicly aligned themselves with interests that run counter to those of the Albanians and the West in the conflict between Serbia, the West, and the Albanians. Today, 234 days since the murder of the December Leader Every day that passes since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, proves the involvement of Fatos Nano’s government and its successor in the crime that shook the entire Albanian world. The governments of the former communists, while the criminals who took the life of the December Leader remain free and undisturbed, are showing Albanians that they have been and remain on the side of the killers, who have names and surnames but are untouched by those in power. Democrats and all Albanians who loved and honored Azem Hajdari cannot tolerate this under any circumstances. The Government must either capture the criminals and bring them to justice, or publicly declare that it itself carried out the murder of Azem Hajdari.

The National Council of the PDSH, convened today, 03 May 1999, after analyzing and discussing at length: the political positions of the PD regarding the national problem arising from developments in Kosovo, as well as the commitment of its structures to assist those arriving from Kosovo in an effort to escape the genocide and ethnic cleansing undertaken by the Milosheviç regime; the situation in the north of the country and ensuring the preservation of state sovereignty and integrity; the continuation of political revenge, violence, and political processes undertaken by the governing coalition; Decided: The political positions adopted during this period by the Democratic Party of Albania concerning the Albanian national question and, in particular, the Kosovo issue have made it the clearest hope and principal supporter of pan-Albanian national interests, in full respect of the standards required by international acts. Throughout its existence, the PDSH has not only sought a solution to the Kosovo problem on the basis of the principle of self-determination, but has also considered Kosovo’s independence a necessary condition for lasting stability in the Balkans. Its insistence that the Albanian Parliament recognize the Republic of Kosovo in 1991, the internationalization of the Kosovo issue in the main document of the Helsinki Summit in 1992, and its consistent refusal to tolerate any tendency that sought to put political power interests first have made the PDSH, in the eyes of all public opinion, the most faithful expression of Albanian national and patriotic interests. It was this determination of the PDSH that enabled it to expose all attempts to implement anti-national scenarios, which culminated not only in the events of March 1997, but also in Crete, Lisbon, Krasmonat; at times these sought to weaken Albania’s support, at times they sought to remove the Kosovo issue from the tables of international diplomacy and turn it into a problem of Milosheviç, and at times they sought to portray the Kosovars’ resistance for national and human survival as a movement inspired by ideologies now rejected by the democratic world. The National Council of the PDSH expresses its great satisfaction that, in these difficult and critical days for our nation, the Albanians have the USA and Western countries by their side, with whom they share the values of their civilization, freedom, and democracy. The National Council expresses its deepest gratitude to President Clinton and the leaders of the main Western countries for their determination to defend the rights of Kosovo’s Albanian population and for the plans they have announced for the political and economic ordering of the Balkans, Albania, and Kosovo. As a pro-Western Albanian political force, the PD will place all its political capacity at the service of this reconstruction. I. The National Council welcomes the efforts made by the Presidency and the Chairman of the PDSH, Berisha, to make possible the unification of the Albanian political position on the national problem. “One Nation, One Position,” which a year ago served as the PD’s parallel initiative to unify national support, has today become a pan-Albanian doctrine. The National Council recognizes the important role achieved after meetings with representatives of all political forces, at which all Albanian political forces, recognizing one another’s right to self-determination for Albanians in Kosovo and publicly expressing a unified position on the national problem, dealt a heavy blow to the anti-national line that accompanied our national cause throughout its history in this century, also contributing significantly to the creation of the broadest representation Kosovo had ever had at the Rambouillet Conference. The National Council considers the successful conduct of Rambouillet and its signing an important stage in resolving the Kosovo problem, since it made it possible to guarantee Kosovo’s borders, put an end to a century of Serbian rule in Kosovo by turning it into a Western protectorate, and created the opportunity to build institutions.
