Kosovo at the center of the split from Tirana By Budi VOKA The last few hours have seen eruptions and signs of the Albanian political convulsion in relation to Kosovo, also referred to as a national drama. This pain has emerged against the mutual effort to unite the Albanian factor. Tension and concern continue to dominate, especially in relations between the political forces in Tirana and the representatives of Albanian political structures in Kosovo. Mutual accusations and suspicions about the policy that should be followed regarding Kosovo became public yesterday. They first appeared at the meeting of the Presidency of the Democratic Party and were followed by a rapid and harsh reaction from the president of the Republic of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova. During the meeting of the Presidency of the Democratic Party held yesterday morning, Democratic leader Sali Berisha sharply accused the president of the Republic of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, of pursuing a national-communist policy inspired by Edi Rama and Fatos Nano. Berisha said that the worsening relations with the UÇK leaders who appear in Tirana are one of the reasons why this situation has been reached. He accused Rugova of serving Belgrade and undermining efforts for national cooperation. On the other hand, in a public reaction, President Rugova rejected these accusations, stressing that his positions have always been in the service of the Kosovo cause and of coordination with international partners. The crisis of public statements has once again highlighted the lack of a common Albanian political platform for Kosovo. In Tirana, the moves and statements have been seen as signs of deep divisions between the governing camp, the opposition, and the institutions that speak in the name of Kosovo. These developments are taking place at a moment when the war in Kosovo is entering a new phase and when expectations for political coordination are higher than ever. Rugova’s response, accompanied by other political voices, has further deepened the public debate.
