NATO burns Jovanović’s letter

Socialists in Macedonia sharply attack Prime Minister Georgievski, who said that NATO’s patience is running out. Skopje. Diplomats of the western alliance called absurd and unacceptable a proposal submitted by the president of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosević, for resolving the Kosovo conflict, while socialists in Macedonia, known as opponents of NATO’s involvement in the Yugoslav crisis, strongly attacked Prime Minister Ljubço Georgievski over his statements regarding the conflict in Kosovo. According to a NATO spokesman in Brussels, the alliance will not enter talks on the basis of the letter from Yugoslav President Milosević, addressed to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The spokesman said that NATO’s position, which has been supported by the G-8 partners and at the foreign ministers’ meeting in Bonn, regarding Kosovo, remains unchanged. These are the complete and verifiable withdrawal of Yugoslav forces from Kosovo, the deployment of an international military presence in the province, the return of all refugees to their homes, and allowing an important role for the UÇK in the process of implementing the peace agreement. NATO spokesman Jamie Shea said that Milosević should focus on the five conditions and not try to evade reality. He added that a peaceful solution to the Kosovo crisis can be based only on the principles adopted by the industrialized countries of the G-8. NATO also called absurd Belgrade’s argument that the alliance’s bombing has made a peaceful resolution of the crisis more difficult. The spokesman said that the timing of the Yugoslav president’s letter made it clear that he was trying to involve the alliance in talks while military action is ongoing. He said that NATO’s war will continue until he accepts the alliance’s demands. Asked about the alliance’s position toward the UÇK, the NATO spokesman stressed that NATO is doing everything possible to help the population of Kosovo and is cooperating with the Albanian forces and government. Macedonian officials reacted harshly to statements by the country’s Prime Minister Ljubço Georgievski, who said that NATO’s patience is running out in relation to the Kosovo conflict. According to him, a ground intervention is inevitable and the government in Skopje must prepare for the consequences. Socialists accused him of inflaming tensions and jeopardizing the country’s interests. ON PAGE 4
