The Tirana government continues to be rejected by the Americans, creating a dangerous void in relations with the USA through its conduct and instability. A visit by Madlen Olbrajt, announced by Tirana officials themselves and scheduled for Sunday, did not take place. The American chief diplomat visited Albania, but did not come to Tirana, although her visit would have been a great joy for Albanians. The government has provided no official explanation for the cancellation of this visit, even though it would have been normal for at least the Foreign Ministry or the Prime Minister’s Office—which had also announced Olbrajt’s visit—to explain why the visit did not happen. Nor has the letter Olbrajt sent to the prime minister been made public, unlike other cases, when parts of letters exchanged with Western international figures were published without hesitation, even though they were mostly just formalities[?]. The Americans have also declined other visits to Tirana after senior Albanian officials announced such visits. Another case was Mrs Klinton’s refusal to come to Albania, while she visited several refugee camps in Macedonia. The leaders of the war against the Serbian terrorist military machine have made visits to Tirana taboo. Both in Mrs Klinton’s case and that of the Secretary of State, Ollbrajt, the reason they did not come lies in the country’s government policy, as well as in the pro-eastern leanings of some senior Albanian officials. For some time, the Americans have declared Albania a country posing a high level of danger to them, and the situation reached a peak with the suspension of a substantial part of the US embassy’s activities in Tirana. An announcement by the Department of State issued at that time said that in Albania everything of value is attacked and violated. The image of the country built over the last two years has not changed at all, even today, despite the replacement of prime ministers and ministers. The Albanian government, satisfied with its humanitarian activity—which in essence is the humanity of ordinary Albanians themselves—has put aside the country’s major problem: public security, stability, and the fight against gangs. Neither Ollbrajt nor Mrs Klinton can come to a country where the number of people killed over the last two years increases every day at an accelerating rate. Nor can political investment be made in some Albanian officials who, although they do not demonstrate in the streets against the USA or NATO, as European communists do in March, are making every effort to steer Albania toward Orthodox eastern circles. Until the beginning of the crisis of refugees arriving from Kosovo, Tirana was the most unsafe place in the world. Bler, Zhospën, Aznar brought people from the camps here. Even the most naive Albanian when it comes to government affairs understands that they would never come to the most corrupt country in the world, nor to a country where gangs and the mafia closely connected to state politics make the law. It is now clear to Albanians that the officials who are keeping the Americans away have no intention of doing anything good for the country. The void that has arisen in relations with the USA must be eliminated through the necessary reforms within Albania. The US government is decisive in the struggle for Kosovo and NATO’s victory in this war. If one of its senior representatives, such as Mrs Ollbrajt, refuses to come to Tirana, then these pro-American sentiments among Albanians will diminish. This means someone is trying to steer the country in the opposite direction from development and democracy.

Today, 278 days since the murder of the December Leader Every day that passes since the murder of Azem Hajdari, the symbol of democracy and pluralism, proves the involvement of Fatos Nano’s government and his successor in the crime that shocked the entire Albanian world. The governments of the former communists, who hold power and have placed the criminals who took the December Leader’s life in positions of authority, show Albanians that they have been and remain on the side of the murderers. They reek of burning, yet those in power do not touch them. Democracy and the whole of society loved and honored Azem Hajdari. The government either tolerates the criminals and brings them to justice, or publicly declares that it was responsible for Azem Hajdari’s murder.
