Two years of mafia rule in Albania
Two years of
mafia rule in Albania
By Bati GJOLLA
Two years ago, on 29 June ’97, Albanians would learn after a few days the outcome of the elections and the victory of the left. Two years later, Albanians now see 29 June ’99 as the end of the mandate of the failed and corrupt rule of the socialists and their allies. Freed from the anger and anxiety that had gripped them for two years, they are now facing the high cost of this misgovernment. Finding themselves in an unprecedented state of poverty and misery, insecurity for life and property, Albanians end these two years with a deep revulsion for this government and with the full conviction that even the days left to it are truly its last days.
Just as with a political comeback on the basis of an uprising that bloodied the country, destroyed the state, took hundreds of lives and left the country in complete anarchy, and which came to power in June ’97, the country’s ruling left, considering taking power at any cost and by any means a “historical victory”, sought to govern the country in non-democratic terms, but in mafia terms. Therefore, its rule during these two years has been clan rule serving their interests, a mafia-style rule under the shadow of crime, trafficking, corruption and theft.
From the outset, seeing the state and governance as a means to satisfy their clan appetites, the socialists built a government that, more than anything else, symbolized the various clans of the relatives of the prime minister, the president, the head of SHIK, the chief prosecutor, etc. Treating the country as their own property, these clans privatized the government, the administration, the police, SHIK, customs, taxes, justice, healthcare, banks, strategic enterprises and the economy. All of these are today part of the mechanism of a mafia state, which is responsible for the destruction Albania has suffered in these two years.
Albania today is a country in which insecurity, the lack of order and public peace, murders, robberies, kidnappings of people and of hundreds of millions of lekë, corruption, smuggling, trafficking and state theft have become nationwide phenomena. The level of criminality and its capture of the entire state mechanism is today so high that the poverty, misery, unemployment and serious economic situation of Albanian families have now multiplied many times over. In these two years, Albanians have understood that mafia rules in their country, not the rule of law.

BERISHA: “Then the leaders spiritually tied to the mercenaries of the KLA, whose decision not to implement the decisions of the Security Council, the Albanian constitution and the socialist government, will understand that ‘they will change because they will not know the reason they are from and where they are going’. In any case, the final word today belongs to the National Assembly”.

D’Alema: The results are

The strength of the Italian right has been confirmed with an excellent result in the elections for the European Parliament.
If on 13 June Berlusconi’s party had 25.17%, yesterday, with 27.4 percent, it moved ahead of all the parties in the right-wing coalition. The majority of the Union gets only 17.7%, while the People’s Party 13.2%. The figures speak clearly and the leader of the Italian right has clearly benefited from the current situation and from the easing of the controversy surrounding the war in Kosovo. However, Berlusconi’s winning stance should not be read only as the effect of the strong campaign and the result as such, but also as a reflection of the crisis in the left coalition. In any case, his ally Fini has now declared that the right must remain united in order to project “together the next government”.
