Grapes & plums

Prime Minister Berisha was on an official visit to Norway two weeks ago. For several months now, he has been comparing Albania to Norway. He did so again yesterday in Parliament when he said that “... Albania is a small Norway on the Balkan Peninsula.”
One week earlier he was on a visit to Israel. One would have to wait more than a few months for the comparison with Israel to be made. In fact, with a point that would be unfavorable for the country. The comparison is for the deep tension, the totally polarized situation and the ongoing conflict, not between two different nations as in the Middle East, Israelis and Palestinians and Arabs, but between two halves of a single country, the government and the governed, the right and the left, those at the top in power and those at the bottom in opposition. One single parliamentary session, the approval of the 2012 budget, was enough to once again sadly note that the parties share no common ground whatsoever for the country’s future, that what is “magnificent,” according to Doctor Berisha, can in no way be “worse,” according to Edi Rama. What is a success for one side is a tragedy for the other. “1,600 megawatts of energy have been stripped away,” says the Doctor, but the opposition replies that so far, even in this field, “it has simply been harvested and threshed by the storm.”
What is happening and re-happening like a film seen many times in Tirana? On paper there is an agreement between the ruling majority and the opposition on electoral reform and the approval of important laws with three-fifths. In practice, even the Doctor does not believe such a thing... continued on page 7
