But now an extremely important document emerges: the letter that Mehmet Shehu sent to Enver Hoxha on 20 October 1975 about the censored poem “The Red Pashas” TIRANA ADMIRINA PEÇI The letter was published in full for the first time, with facsimile, by the researcher Shaban Sinani in the books “Literature in Totalitarianism” and “Dossier K”, published by the publishing house and literary studio “Naimi” in summer 2011. In this letter, Shehu’s criticisms are given, the point-by-point highlighting of the writer’s serious mistakes, then a request to save this writer, who after all is not “like Paçarami” who turned his back on the Party, but has “been given a chance to know the teachings of Marxism better”, and finally a dramatic phrase that seems to wipe out every previous line of this letter: “...That is how I think. But I may also be wrong. In any case, I agree as you decide.” The poem had caused a storm. Four days before this letter, on 16 October 1975, Dritëro Agolli, chairman of the Writers’ League, wrote to the member of the Central Committee Pirro Kondi that “the poem was alarming”. What next? The real storm would break out in the meetings of the Central Committee, where harsh accusations thundered against the writer, meeting after meeting. I call him that because that is how it is proper to be called, as everywhere in the world, anyone who has held the high office of head of state. Indeed, he should even be treated as such until the end of his life, with a special status and decorated by law, because only in Albania does it happen that after completing his term a president is called “former” and ...as leader of this stolen and devalued opposition, I will continue to welcome the criticisms of the only socialist President toward the PS and toward me, especially toward me, in newspapers above all, but also on television screens. From my point of view, his criticisms have usually poured unjustly onto us and me, but in any case that is no problem so far. Everyone keeps the right to his own viewpoint and it is the unquestionable right of President Meidani to be dissatisfied with the PS, with its leadership, and with me personally, without a doubt. What makes me speak publicly, for the first time in open contradiction with him, is his prolonged repetition about speaking and speaking of a necessary unification of the left as he calls it, plainly saying: “Without the LSI the PS cannot come to power” and adding “Edi Rama cannot do this unification.” He is not the only one who finds the magic key to our victory in Ilir Meta’s pocket, but in this case, despite the efforts of the metovs, I cannot find what moral justification this would have... continued on page 5
