A look at the Albanian media

Editorial BY XHAFERR RAKIPLLARI Editorial BY XHAFERR RAKIPLLARI A look at the Albanian media Only 17% of the world's population lives in countries where they enjoy media freedom. In the rest of the world, governments or other non-state actors control the viewpoints that reach citizens by suppressing independent voices. This is more or less the essence of the 2011-2012 World Media Freedom Report, published by “Reporters Without Borders”. The report clearly notes the negative direction in which the media in the Balkans is heading. Our Albania is ranked 96th, one place behind the Dominican Republic and one place ahead of Cameroon. Among the Balkan countries ahead of us are: Bosnia (58), Croatia (68), Serbia (80), Kosovo (86), Macedonia (94), while behind us is only Montenegro in 107th place. Beside Albania, two arrows can be seen (like the two television channels we are forced to watch in order to balance, however little, the information we receive) which show that the decline is greater than 10 places, a full 16 places lower than a year earlier. But what are the reasons that have brought the media to this level? “Reporters Without Borders” clearly state that the use of the media for private and criminal interests, unfair competition in extremely small markets, and self-censorship by a large number of poorly paid journalists, are stones on the grave of all Balkan countries, including Albania. “Justice, with poorly trained personnel, allied with the government and often corrupt, seems more interested in striking the media” than in ending impunity for those who threaten or physically attack journalists. This is the case of Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and... continues on page 10
