Commentary BY PREÇ ZOGAJ There is no balanced stance on January 21 A comprehensive investigation of January 21 and a balanced stance on January 21, such as the one expressed by former Prime Minister Fatos Nano at the opening of his presidential campaign, are two different things, completely different. A comprehensive investigation has been and remains necessary; indeed, it should have begun immediately, on the tragic evening of January 21, without the obstacles and alibis that Prime Minister Berisha brought up, without giving the accused time to destroy evidence, to sort things out, to tamper with the murder weapons, to destroy the recordings made by the internal and external cameras of the Prime Minister’s Office, that is, without the crime of concealing the crime taking place, for which the perpetrators have entered into double debt before the law, before public opinion and the families of the victims, undoubtedly, since if the killings were carried out verbally on behalf of the government and the state, the concealment was attempted like cowards, out of their own fear. The comprehensive investigation has functioned and is functioning fully on the opposition side and partially on the side of the government and state institutions. Dozens of participants in the opposition demonstration of January 21 have been investigated and fined or sentenced to days in prison for minor offenses. Three opposition MPs have had their immunity lifted and are under investigation. The investigation into the killings is progressing with great difficulty and as it moves toward clarification. The opposition has supported the comprehensive investigation; it has presented itself from beginning to end with the conviction that it has nothing to hide. The government is not symmetrical with the opposition on this point. Nor is the Prosecutor’s Office symmetrical toward the parties in the investigation so far.
