Comment BY AFRIM KRASNIQI The state as private history Yesterday, 5 May, the Day of the Martyrs, was officially commemorated. Left and right competed to honour, each according to its preferred political conductor, “periods, events and individuals linked to history, war, resistance and public memory. As always, the difference remained between the perception that the parties have of the Second World War and its “fallen, and consequently, of every event and individual over the last 60-80 years who has been identified with the rival political sides of that war. Some honour the partisans who fell in the war, some honour the nationalists who fell in the war, but everyone does so with the greatest solemnity, with official ceremonies, before and beyond the statue and on the same date. It seems that when it comes to two parallel histories that compete, they speak and continue to fight even after seven or eight decades with just as much zeal as in the dramatic days of the 1940s. In this way, Albania has changed two political systems (the totalitarian communist system and the democratic one), the eyewitnesses who survived from the war period can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and yet the hour of judgement has remained the same, unmoved, as once determined in Përmet or Labinot, with the same anachronistic and vengeful, excluding and denigrating judgement... continues on page 5
