Comment BY PJERIN NDREU Crime, the government and the citizens For the third year in a row, crime has taken the wheel and appears everywhere, killing, stealing, and abusing anyone who stands in its way. The crime curve has taken an upward trajectory like never before after the disastrous year ’97. Murders, suicides, and car accidents have become the topics of the day, with dozens of people losing their lives in noticeable numbers. Safety for life has fallen significantly. Panic has begun to rise among people, while the government continues the old communist-style ritual, where everything is a success and nothing happens. Irresponsible claims that murders are lower than in the EU, that the media is to blame because it exaggerates crimes, or that we have eliminated organized crime, are heard every day from politicians in power, deafening the tired ears of Albanians with the daily black chronicle. Crime strikes in the center of cities, on the outskirts, near police stations, in protected military facilities, crime strikes on the beach, in the sand, crime strikes in the street, in homes, in business, crime is the master of everything, feeding the black chronicles of the media, which are the only ones that make what is really happening visible. Crime strikes a deputy, a judge, the mayor of the commune, the former police chief of Tirana, and still people are certain that no one says we have problems. According to it, the government has “secured” everything. But it has forgotten to inform its citizens that low economic levels and high unemployment breed crime.
