BY ANILA BASHA In the name of transparency Everything that is happening with the sale of Albpetrol and the staggering offer made by the company Vetro SilkRoad of 850 million euros raises many questions and adds to the confusion for all Albanians. Several questions are being raised that no senior official in the administration is answering. What should have been the most transparent procedure in the country, since it concerns the sale of one of the last companies left in Albania, is being wrapped in an extraordinary ‘veil’ of mystery. One of the first questions that comes to mind these days is: Why is Sali Berisha silent? How is it possible that the prime minister is not speaking about the company that has put forward the figure of 850 million euros, at least three times higher than the valuation made by the PattonBoggs experts contracted by the Albanian government to assess this public asset. How is it possible that the prime minister, who never misses a chance to cut ribbons and make statements, even for contributions of up to 10,000 euros for... continues on page 8

BY PREÇ ZOGAJ American chances The privatization offers for Albpetrol are being examined by the relevant commission at the Ministry of Economy. According to the latest reports, three companies have now remained in the race. The ranking by the highest price offered is led by the American consortium “Silk Vetro Road Equity ltd”. The 850 million euro offer from this consortium has caused a great stir, as it is a figure larger than the total value of all privatizations to date of strategically important assets. The government commission has the authority to examine, in accordance with Albanian legislation, all the elements of this offer. There is no doubt that the higher the sale price of Albpetrol, the more it serves the public interest, and from this point of view the American offer is good news in every respect, news that carries the substance of a blessing.
