For a “second nature”

Commentary BY ARDIAN NDRECA For a “second nature” All modernity has thought and believed in the possibility of creating a human “second nature.” Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel are the beacons that illuminated the birth of our modern society by relying on reason proper. History itself, according to Hegel, is the journey that marks the transition from the “first nature” to the human “second nature.” The “first nature” is man as he exists immediately, without culture, without emancipation, without the idea of the state, without the awareness of being free, without consciousness of the common sphere where he finds and meets others as equals. This is the man of dark passions, which always decide in his favor as an individual. The “second nature,” on the other hand, is shaped by rational principles, by the spirit of an absolute mind that hovers over history, realizing itself. Schelling also speaks of the realization of a “universal legal constitutional order” as the path to the realization of our freedom. Law and constitutional order are fully affirmed when they become part of us, that is, when they become our second nature. All of this is understood in the light of what these philosophers treat as “evil in history.” For Kant, evil in history is expressed in the blocking of interests... continues on page 13
