Comment BY AURON TARE The unconditional surrender of the Albanian state Eight years ago, after a long lobbying effort by a number of well-known names in European culture, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee unanimously decided to accept Gjirokastër into its fold for the unique values that this city holds. Albania, besides Butrint, could now also be proud of Gjirokastër. Entering such a prestigious club certainly also entails its obligations. But unfortunately, the Albanian state, more precisely the Ministry of Culture, has spectacularly failed to fulfill the legal obligations of this Elite Club. Our cultural institutions are not capable of protecting not only Albanian Cultural Heritage but also World Heritage, a commitment they undertook in the name of Albanians when they asked to join UNESCO. Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of Gjirokastër’s admission to UNESCO. A great and very youthful celebration. Perhaps as never before, young people had come to Gjirokastër. Also yesterday in Gjirokastër, together with a number of my friends, I was there too to speak about the great importance of the values that this city has.
