A new refrigerator with a capacity of 2,000 quintals has started operating at the meat-and-dairy collection and processing enterprise in Fier. The construction of this facility, which was built by the NNU enterprise, involved an investment of 1.1 million lekë. The refrigerator has five large rooms, which will ensure cooling by means of two powerful compressors with a cooling capacity of 90,000 kilocalories per hour. KRISTAQ THANO

During January, 10 new models of willow-basket products were made at the district’s arts enterprise in Shkodër; notable among them are baskets and chair seats. These products have been contracted with the airport-import enterprise. This was achieved in response to suggestions from innovators and specialists. On this day, work began at the new line for producing ordinary sausage, as well as traditional products such as kolletë, etc., at the collection and processing enterprise of the Kolonjë district. — Announcement of the Central Commission for Socialist Competition — The working class, the cooperative peasantry and other workers, in the jubilee year of the 45th anniversary of the liberation of the Homeland, worked with enthusiasm and a strong sense of responsibility to fulfil their tasks in strengthening the country’s economy and defence, determined to continue along the road of building socialism. The revolutionary initiatives of the masses, dynamic and concrete emulation, and competition among enterprises further raised the spirit of mobilisation in the struggle to win the title “Shock Worker This led to some of the best results of the entire Eighth Five-Year Plan being achieved in many sectors of the economy. More than 2 billion lekë in additional social product was generated compared with 1988, and national income rose by 10 per cent. “Today, the southern mine, with all its sectors, is exceeding its targets. The highest production quotas since January 1 are being reached. The first sector, headed by Afrim Lika, is achieving as much as 131 percent of its daily target. The two drilling rigs that arrived these past few days have been taken underground.” Information of this kind, determined and communicated in Bulqiza, is enriched with new reports every day from the chrome-mining and production fronts. This report catches the attention of Besnik Çeni, secretary of the Party bureau. — At the southern mine, despite the difficulties at the beginning of the year, production quotas and mining-work schedules are increasing every day. Absences from work have almost disappeared from the records. The underground drilling department is more mobilized than ever and is being organized into three shifts. Through drilling, they will very soon establish the quantity of geological reserves in this area. The same response is evident on other fronts, too. Selishta and Vajkal, although their production is small, are achieving a fast pace. At Tërnovë, more than 100 tons of chrome are produced each day above the plan. During the last three days, production at the northern mine has reached the level of an assault-day. A few days ago, the workers on level 6 pledged to produce 500 tons of chrome above the plan by the end of January. Over these past two or three days, the excess has reached 136 tons. In the gallery where Socialist Labour Hero Xhevat Elezi works, the excess amounts to 104 tons of ore. Another indicator is that for several days no one here has been absent from work. Meanwhile, the mechanical department fulfilled its promise to repair breakdowns within the day. All these reports generate mobilization and emulation in workers’ conversations. In particular, a report from the geologists brings joy to everyone in the mine. Let us explain in the words of Sulejman Alia, chief geologist of the geological enterprise. The “16 Tetori” mine, as a new deposit, presents many difficulties because its geological structures are unknown. The two underground drilling rigs installed by this enterprise and the other two installed by the mine’s geologists, together with the close cooperation among specialists, have produced two very good results in recent days, which fully support the new mine’s plan for this year. The results are close at hand. It will take only two or three months to put it into operation, although this had been scheduled for September. These extensive works also clarified the structures and identified reserves for the mine. That is why Fitim Strazimiri, Kujtim Lala and their fellow geologists are optimistic. FRANO ÇAKA

Also present were the member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, comrade Lenka Çuko; the member of the Political Bureau of the Party’s Central Committee and Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, comrade Besnik Bekteshi; the first secretary of the Tirana District Party Committee, comrade Pirro Kondi; and the chairman of the Executive Committee of the District People’s Council, comrade Sylejman Alia. geologists are optimistic. The secretary Agim Dardha, then announced the moral and material incentives for the winners of the 1989 socialist competitions. An artistic programme of songs, dances, recitations and comedy was presented for those attending by artists from the country’s cultural and artistic institutions. Interviews were also held with leading workers from the collectives that won the 1989 socialist competitions. To commemorate the 66th anniversary of the death of V.I. Lenin, the outstanding teacher and leader of the international proletariat and all the oppressed peoples of the world, political activities were held in various districts of the country. Students and lecturers of the “V.I. Lenin” Higher Party School in the capital took part in “The Party of Labour of Albania has long held aloft the banner of Leninism,” an event held on the occasion by Qemal Hoxharova. It spoke of Lenin’s immortal work and of the principled and consistent struggle waged by the PLA and comrade Ramiz Alia, in continuation of the teachings of our dear and unforgettable leader, comrade Enver Hoxha, to defend the purity of Marxism-Leninism against modern revisionism in all its forms. Several activities were held to mark this anniversary in the district of Shkodër. A gathering was held at the city’s House of Culture and Folk Creativity, where speakers discussed Lenin, the great leader of the October Revolution; poems were recited, and an exhibition of images from his life and revolutionary activity was opened. The cooperative members of the “Stalin” agricultural cooperative in Koplik listened with interest to the talk “Lenin’s brilliant teachings will live through the ages.” Pupils of the “7 Nëntori” eight-year school presented a musical-literary montage beside the bust of V. At the invitation of Reis Malile, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania, Havier Perez de Kuelar, Secretary-General of the UN, will pay an official and friendly visit to Albania. BEFORE USING ELECTRICITY These days, the General Directorate of Electric Power in Tirana is monitoring electricity production and consumption with concern and a sense of responsibility. Specialists discuss the production and use of electricity every day, examining the figures... The situation in the water reserves of hydroelectric power station reservoirs dictates this. Lake Fierzë, the main “feeder” of our hydroelectric power stations, is below its normal level. The drought of recent months and the low temperatures have reduced river inflows, particularly those of the Drin. During the first 20 days of January, this river’s inflow was only 40 percent of the multi-year average. Snow reserves in the Drin’s catchment basin are also extremely low. Isn’t this unusual situation one that truly calls for extraordinary efforts? Because of this situation, hydroelectric power station workers are working to use existing water reserves efficiently. But that alone is not enough. There is another side to the problem. The good work of the producers is sometimes jeopardized by the consumers. By January 15, when the General Directorate of Electric Power issued a telegram calling attention to the need to use electricity sparingly, 12 districts had exceeded their planned quotas. By January 20, the number of these districts had risen to 17! Shkodër had consumed nearly 2 million kilowatt-hours more, Vlorë 1.3 million, Tirana 1.2 million... Where is this taking us? Specialists in the electric power sector are right to be concerned that these overruns are worsening the situation further. If this continues, restrictions will begin in the summer. Then the district enterprises will offer their excuses: “We did not meet the plan because we lacked electricity.” To prevent things from reaching this point, the planned quotas must be strictly observed, and electricity must even be saved, as the districts of Durrës, Krujë and Pogradec are doing... Specialists at the district enterprises do not need to be shown ways to save electricity. There are many, and they are well known. The point is to implement them responsibly and with a firm hand in the use of electricity, while fighting the notion that “we have plenty of electricity.” The situation must be assessed by every enterprise and by the district committees exactly as it is.
