ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR PEOPLE

— On the 70th anniversary of the National Congress of Lushnjë — Two and a half years of the First World War and the adventures of foreign generals and governments, especially those of Italy and Greece, which had chauvinistic aims at Albania’s expense, had turned the country into a battlefield of wars and foreign interventions. This caused Albania to be divided into several zones of occupation by foreign armies, while the government of Durrës, created on 25 December 1918 and led by Turhan Pashë Përmeti, proved powerless and submissive to foreigners. The decisions of the Paris Peace Conference seriously endangered the very existence of the Albanian state. In these conditions, Albanian patriotic forces sprang into action. On 21 January 1920, the National Congress assembled in the city of Lushnjë, becoming one of the most important events in the history of our people. The Lushnjë Congress rejected the plans to partition Albania and firmly affirmed its independence. It overthrew the government of Durrës and created the new highest bodies of the Albanian state: the High Council, the National Council, and the national government with Sulejman Delvina as prime minister. It was also decided that Tirana would become the country’s capital. The importance of the Lushnjë Congress also lies in the fact that it mobilized the Albanian people to defend the freedom and territorial integrity of the homeland. Its spirit was revealed in the Vlora War, which dealt a severe blow to imperialist plans and led to the withdrawal of the Italian occupiers from Vlora. Today, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the National Congress of Lushnjë, our people pay deep respect to the patriots who organized and led this historic assembly. Its legacy remains a powerful source of inspiration for the unceasing efforts in defense of independence, sovereignty, and socialism. FROM THE SPEECH OF PROF. STEFANAQ POLLO

The 70th anniversary of the Lushnjë Congress is an occasion to assess the significance of this event in national history. The Congress was a high political and national act through which the Albanian people reaffirmed the right to their own independent state and laid the foundations for the consolidation of its institutions. In the difficult conditions of the time, when the danger of partitioning the country was real, the delegates gathered in Lushnjë took decisions of decisive importance for the fate of the homeland. Their activity gave impetus to the patriotic movement and strengthened confidence in the Albanian people’s ability to defend freedom and sovereignty. The Lushnjë Congress remains a landmark in our modern history and proof of the political maturity of Albanian patriots.
