He pointed out that, with the new guidelines and the demands now placed on literature and the arts and on the work of publishing houses, it is necessary to further raise the quality of books, enrich the themes, deepen the issues addressed, and improve the professional level of editing and preparation for publication. In the course of the discussion it was said that our creative work must be closer to life, to work, and to the concerns of today’s people, must boldly and responsibly address important phenomena of our social development, and must help communist education and the affirmation of our moral values. It was stressed that there are greater possibilities for works with clear ideas, a more effective artistic structure, and a richer language. It was also noted that in many sectors there are unused reserves: in the selection of manuscripts, in work with authors, in critical judgment, in a better reflection of reality, and in encouraging young talents.
