“JOURNEY” ON TIRANA’S NEW RING ROAD

Description The transition and the condition of our roads are increasingly becoming part of everyday city life. In a wider view, this is also noticeable on Tirana’s new ring road, where work on its arrangement and improvement continues. The road presents difficulties in some places, but at the same time it also testifies to efforts to give the capital a more orderly and modern traffic flow. During the “journey” along this important segment, the eye encounters work vehicles, construction brigades, passers-by and local residents, who follow the progress of the works with interest. There are also remarks about the pace, the quality, and the need for greater care at some problematic points. Nevertheless, everything shows that this project will serve Tirana better. This report describes the sights, the pace, and people’s expectations regarding the new ring road. (Continued on page 3)

What Do the Farmer’s Children Hold in Their Hands?

In the artists’ studios On the morning of 24 February, I found the people’s painter Agim Sulaj in his usual studio. On the easel there was a new composition, while in the corner sketches and mock-ups could be seen. The conversation began with the question that the painter had turned into a creative motif: what do the farmer’s children hold in their hands? In his canvases, the children appear sometimes with books, sometimes with simple toys, sometimes with products from the countryside, symbolizing the connection between the new life and work and the future. The artist speaks about his search for a pure figure, about light, color, and the human atmosphere he wants to bring onto the canvas. The visit to the studio thus becomes also a conversation about realist art, the artist’s responsibility, and the inspiration that comes from everyday life. (Continued on page 4)
