The land-reclamation workers handed over for agricultural use the new project that reclaimed the lands of Stjar, Shëmar and Vllahat. The value of a day’s work across the district reached 14.5 lekë last year. In implementation of the decisions of the 10th Plenum of the Party’s Central Committee, cooperative families were given 2,400 cows and 7–9 head of small livestock per family, which has helped improve the supply of livestock products. There have also been achievements in sugar and in other sectors. More than 85 percent of pupils who finish the eight-year schools continue on to secondary schools. Among the outstanding agricultural economies in the district is the “Lefter Talo” agricultural cooperative of Livadhja, where Comrade Adil Çarçani went yesterday to meet the people of this area. First, he laid a bouquet of flowers beside the bust of the People’s Hero Lefter Talo and visited the regional museum. In the village of Vagalat, part of this economy, which lies in a cold climate beneath the shade of an ancient plane tree, Comrade Adil Çarçani met and spoke face to face with cooperative members from Livadhja and others who had come from the economies of Vurg: from Grava and Konispol, Partizani and Aliko, from Vrina, etc. offered warm and promising words, Comrade Adil Çarçani took the floor. Everything that has been achieved, and which is incomparable with the past, he said, is the work, toil and sweat of your brow. You have worked and continue to work according to the teachings of the Party, of the great and unforgettable leader, Comrade Enver Hoxha, and in accordance with the instructions of Comrade Ramiz Alia. Our successes are rooted in the people; therefore, working people. As in the National Liberation War and today in the socialist construction of the country, our Party has relied firmly on the people, who fought and shed blood, took power into their own hands and, over these 46 years since liberation, built a new life in a fierce struggle against internal and external enemies. Speaking about the great transformations that have taken place, he said that the Party is working for the further revolutionization and democratization of the country’s economic and social life, for strengthening the economy and further developing the country, and for bringing the people closer together so that their unity may grow and strengthen. In this spirit, all the workers of the district must turn their optimism into work and sweat, with discipline, order and vigilance, so that the district may achieve still greater results. Speaking about the prospects opened up by the important decisions of the 11th Plenum of the Party’s Central Committee and the instructions of Comrade Ramiz Alia, Comrade Adil Çarçani stressed that implementing them requires each person to show a high level of commitment at work and a fighting spirit in achieving and surpassing the set targets. Great importance, he said, will be attached to further intensifying agriculture. Just as the Janjar reservoir was greatly expanded, other water projects will be built here in Sarandë in the future, the level of mechanization will rise and the range of chemical fertilizers will be diversified, in implementation of the decisions of the 7th plenums of the Party’s Central Committee, which will help increase agricultural yields and productivity. From Banja to Bovillë—a fine contest among builders Week after week and month after month, the bed of the Devoll changes its appearance. The intersections of the roads built for heavy vehicles lead up to the massive dam, which is being raised with gravel and clay fill. Every day, around 4,000 cubic metres of clay are laid in the dam’s core alone, with the aim of bringing it to a height of 120 metres by the end of July. The brigades of Shaban Shehu, Hamdi Hoti and Hysni Muça work side by side there: the first two on filling the dam and producing concrete, and the other in the grouting and inspection gallery. Each working day ends with production exceeding the norm by 10–20 percent. Hamdi Hoti’s brigade is now working on behalf of the paper mill. Meanwhile, Hysni Muça’s brigade, with its high pace in recent days, has reached its September targets; heavy-vehicle drivers and excavator crews, too, have exceeded 42,000 cubic metres of excavation volume from January until now. As we learn these figures, we also recall a conversation with brigade leader Hysni Muça in May. At the time he said that “together with the steel-fixing and concreting brigades working in the inspection gallery, we had challenged the dam-fill brigades at Banja to a contest, but we also wanted to measure ourselves against our comrades working to build the Bovillë dam.” “A few nights ago we saw on television that Bovillë had also taken shape quite considerably,” Hysniu says now. “Our comrades there spoke well about the work. We listened carefully to Hashim Zyberi, too. They planned to shorten the deadlines for handing over many facilities. It seems to us that the difference between us is very small in terms of exceeding targets, and it is not clear which side will come out ahead by the end of the year, us or them. Nevertheless, we will do our part and will not stop working, even if the comrades at Bovillë overtake us.” This is a contest for the good. What are some of the achievements and obligations at the Banja hydroelectric complex? Elvira Kryemadhi, an economist in the planning department, explains that exceeding the six-month plan was accompanied by a reduction in construction costs of around 150,000 lekë and a 9 percent increase in productivity. The progress and indicators for the first 20 days of July are also satisfactory. By the end of the month, more than 100,000 cubic metres of fill will have been placed in the dam, alongside completion of the concreting work on the intake structure and deep grouting in the cut-off curtain. These achievements bring joy not only to the builders of the project; cooperative members and workers at several enterprises feel their benefits as well. As consumers and as producers Will the July turnaround hold? — KORÇË — During the six-month period, 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were saved in the district of Korçë. These savings increased during the 20-day period as well. In that period, 294,000 kilowatt-hours were saved. On July 20 alone, 3,500 kilowatt-hours were saved. In general, most enterprises in the district are observing their assigned quotas. The best examples are the glass factory and the garment-production enterprise. Two are exceptions in exceeding their quotas ... “we’re doing well, there’s nothing wrong, today I checked consumption” gives one hope as... Here is another problem: it is known that the district of Korçë is a consumer, but also a producer of electricity. These two sides are inseparable. You can save as a consumer, but if you have not done your duty as a producer, you have no positive impact on the country’s energy system. How is it being achieved ... so that it may always come to us ... the yield of good quality. To ensure normal operations, another concern of the workers at this thermal power plant is the supply of spare parts, for which contracts have been concluded with the metallurgical combine. Overall, the energy enterprise of the Korçë district would have fulfilled its production tasks well if the other thermal power plant, the one at Maliq, had not accumulated a deficit of 1 million 600 thousand ... during June. Will the July turnaround hold? — SHKODËR — In the six-month period, network losses alone amounted to more than 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. This is not a new problem; indeed, work has been done to some extent to eliminate it. A brigade at the electricity transmission enterprise has even been assigned to this, but work organization must be at a much higher level. In addition, more effective monitoring is needed everywhere. Electricity consumption during the 20-day period in July seems to have been put on a better track. The fact that savings were made also bears this out. But what is important is to increase these savings, using every watt sparingly. In ... The district task force has issued such instructions, and the enterprises are now doing this better. Attention is focused mainly on large consumers such as the “Drini” plant, the timber combine, the electric-wire plant, etc. These and many other enterprises have achieved significant savings over these 20 days of July as well. But, as in the first six months, agriculture is showing a significant excess during July. This is mainly because the severe drought has required more irrigation than previously forecast. When we asked the water directorate about this issue, they told us that we are obliged to meet the agricultural economies’ demands for water, and for this reason more motor pumps have had to be put into operation. The implementation of the new economic mechanism has also had an effect, since it dictates that you work with a tight rein so as not to incur overspending. Will these savings be maintained? Yes, say the workers of the “electro-jesilësit” enterprise, if economies are made every day, everywhere. Here is one measure that must not be underestimated: electricity consumption data should be collected every day. The idea was that they should work for the production of electricity, but if the other TEG, the one in Maliq, had also served, the situation in June—a deficit of 1 million 600 thousand kilowatt-hours—would not have arisen. The production target has been seriously jeopardized, especially by the small hydroelectric plants, because of the lack of water. During these 20 days of July alone, these hydroelectric plants produced 160,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity less than planned. These problems faced by electricity producers increase the responsibility of the district’s consumers, even though today they are making greater savings. Yesterday’s results are as follows: In the up-to-60 kg category, total: first place and the Balkan champion’s cup went to the deserving Albanian weightlifter Shabani with 262.5 kg; second place to Jaxhi (Turkey) with 257.5 kg, and third place to Teodor (Romania) with 247.5 kg. In the up-to-65 went to the deserving Albanian weightlifter Bishanaku with 270 kg; second place to another Albanian, Mitro, with 260 kg; and third place to Turkish weightlifter Bajdar, also with 260 kg. In the up-to-76 kg category, total: first place and the Balkan championship cup went to Stojanov with 317.5 kg; second place to Flori with 302.5 kg; and third place to Teodorov with 292.5 kg. Description Korabi raises its head up to the clouds. The high mountains, leaning shoulder to shoulder and chest to chest as if in an epic dance of men, like a Dibër wedding celebration. These are fragments of life in these places, gathered, naturally, while travelling through the mountains east of Dibër and set down in these lines. The Treasure of Kalaja e Dodës A long caravan of horses, wedding guests with drums and clarinets. Mountains echo with the sound of the thunderous drumming. Amid this rumbling, when it breaks off as if with the crash of thunder and the clarinet’s release, that ululation and the wedding guests’ fatigue amaze you. Only the national flag unfolds amid that clash of rifles and bullets in Ceren. A few moments later, a few steps farther on, the drum thunders again and the clarinet trills. The people come alive and the echo of the Veleshica valley gathers new strength... For nearly eighty years this custom has taken root and been repeated continually along that stretch of road in Ceren, in those villages that have settled and grown together to form what is called Kalaja e Dodës. The custom originates in a brave deed, in a real event from the autumn of 1913: the struggle to defend these lands from neighbouring chauvinists. On the slopes of Korabi, the rocks turned into outposts would acquire meaningful names: Lufinë, Naxhie Muraku—then a mother with a child (her daughter, Razie, is alive in Radomirë)—stood beside her brother, showing that men knew how to fight, but that women knew how to fight just as well. And the song rose over the strings of the çifteli and echoed through the mountains: “Shaban Alaj, a winged hero,/ Naxhia has taken up her rifle too/ Sister and brother are fighting,/ For the homeland, both are a rampart.” In Kalaja e Dodës, in Ceren, 36 people were killed and massacred by foreigners. The villagers buried them close together in a graveyard in the village’s own soil and ashes, and called it “Vorret e shehive” (the Martyrs’ Graves). Since then, whenever a wedding caravan with the national flag at its head—a beautiful custom in the songs of the mountains—passes along this road, the drums and clarinets fall silent for a few seconds and people bow respectfully to the fallen. A custom that time has nourished with new acts of bravery. On the hill of Kiavitet, on the ancient site of Kalaja e Dodës, the memorial to the brave Kosovar, Hajdar Dushi, is surrounded by a lovely little grove of birch and acacia.
