The Chairman of the Presidium of the People’s Assembly of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania, Comrade Ramiz Alia, received yesterday at the headquarters of the Presidium of the People’s Assembly the American congressman Tom Lantosh, member of the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee and head of the American Congress parliamentary delegation to the European Parliament, as well as former congressman Xhozef Dioguardi and the people accompanying them, who are visiting Albania. Yesterday morning, American congressman Tom Lantosh, his wife, former congressman Xhozef Dioguardi, etc., paid a visit to the city of Berat. They were received by the chairman of the Executive Committee of the District People’s Council, Stavri Risto, who, after welcoming them, spoke to them about the ancient history of this city, as well as the economic and social development of the Berat district. They then visited the «Onufri» Iconographic Museum, where they highly praised the art of Albanian painters of the Middle Ages, the rich work of the renowned 16th-century Berat painter Onufri and his son Nikolla, and others; the high standard of the works and the combination of colours stand out. While touring the museum, congressman Tom Lantosh said that it was of world-class standing and had astonishing beauty. Former congressman Xhozef Dioguardi said that the museum had left an indelible impression on him. First place went to the «Partizani» team, with a time of 2 hours, 43 minutes and 55 seconds; second place to the «Dinamo» team, with 2 hours, 55 minutes and 45 seconds; and third place to the «Vllaznia» team, with 2 hours, 55 minutes and 52 seconds. Individually, first place went to cyclist Selim Çelmela of «Dinamo», second place to Agim Paja of «Partizani», and third place to Brahim Sykja of the «Vllaznia» team. After 10 stages, the «Partizani» team is leading with a time of 72 hours, 18 minutes and 45 seconds, followed by the «Vllaznia» team with 72 hours, 26 minutes and 08 seconds, and «Dinamo» with 72 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds. TO COMRADE RAMIZ ALIA FIRST SECRETARY OF THE CC OF THE PARTY OF LABOUR OF ALBANIA TIRANA These days, we shepherds of small livestock in the Mat district gathered to discuss and exchange experience with one another. The venues of our meetings were the demonstration flocks of advanced experience: Bashkim Jazi’s goat flock at the «1 Maj» agricultural cooperative, and Ramiz Lleshi’s sheep flock at the Rremull agricultural cooperative. These two well-known shepherds, just as last year, are striving to make their targets a reality: to obtain over 300 litres of milk per goat and 110 litres per sheep. At these meetings we learned that dozens of others are following their example. The goat shepherds Nezir Marqueshi, Sule Pisli, Ali Muriqi, Qamil Lila, Fiqiri Demiri, etc., are striving to match Bashkim, while Shkëlqim Fetiu, Nazif Demiri, Ibrahim Ruçi, Qazim Farruku, etc., in their sheep flocks, are working to match Ramiz. By 25 May, many of them had fulfilled their annual plan, obtaining over 110 litres of milk per goat and over 50 litres per sheep. Therefore, at district level too, for the five-month period, much more milk has been delivered than in the same period last year, and small-livestock production has exceeded the planned amount by over 1,000 quintals. At these joyful gatherings of comrades, many of us spoke. All of us who spoke had something in common: inspiration and mobilization. In past years we had concerns and disagreements with the leaders, and even with the specialists, about the remuneration for shepherds’ work. As the saying goes, the specialists got the better deal. We were paid the same as our comrades working in the field brigades, although the nature of our work requires us often to stay beside the flocks night and day. The decisions of the Party’s 9th and 10th Plenums gave us full opportunity to better combine the general interest with the personal one. At these meetings, we learned that everywhere shepherds had received up to 100 lekë in additional pay for every kid or lamb born above plan, or saved from losses below the planned limit. The most outstanding among us had received from 1,000 to 3,600 lekë in additional pay for exceeding the birth targets and reducing losses. After fulfilling this year’s production plan, we will receive 40 to 60 per cent of the value of the milk we deliver above plan. All these examples of advanced practice inspired and encouraged us even more. In this letter, while thanking the Party for the very just decisions it has taken, we also wanted to inform you, dear Comrade Ramiz, of our pledges. We, 1 people, pledged that as a district we would fulfil this year’s small-livestock milk plan at 115 per cent. With 5,000 head of livestock, we—In day. These results are also based on the more careful work we have done over the past 2–3 years to improve the breeds with the «Vali» goat and the «Mat» breed, following the instructions given in May 1987 and 1988 at the meetings in Martanesh and Burrel. The example of the shepherd Bashkim Jazi, who continues the excellent tradition of our comrade, Hero of Socialist Labour Lezun Pisli, and who obtains 600 litres a year per head from more than half of the goats in his flock, clearly shows the possibilities we have. As the experience of the best shepherds shows, achieving these targets is, first and foremost, in our hands, we shepherds. It depends on us to milk the animals 3 times a day, or even 4. This alone increases milk production per head by 25 to 30 per cent compared with milking twice a day. Or, simply by increasing the size of a flock to 100 head, as we saw concretely at Bashkim Jazi’s and Ramiz Lleshi’s, 8 to 10 kg of milk are obtained at each milking. Convinced that we will make these targets a reality, we are pleased to inform you that in this way we, too, are helping implement the Party’s directive that the people’s supply is now a priority responsibility.
