Comrades, from now on the Socialist Party of Albania will be the main and prospective force for the economic and political reform of our society through radical and democratic reforms. Our Party of Labor is today breaking away from the past, freeing itself from everything that has so far prevented it from practically fulfilling its ideals. Within its ranks there are many human beings, with democratic convictions and honesty. It can and must become the strongest party, the most democratic, the most open to differing opinions, the closest to people's problems and concerns. Real democracy cannot be built without the active participation of communists and all members of the Party of Labor, who must be the most determined democrats. Only in this way, by embracing pluralism, freedom of thought, fair political and economic competition, can we move forward. Our party must break away from bureaucracy, from dogmatism, from privileges, from old authoritarian mindsets. It must win the trust of the masses through deeds, through clear positions, and through a deep reform program. If we want Albania to emerge from the severe economic and moral crisis in which it is trapped, then we must set all social energies in motion, seeing every citizen as an active part of democratic change.

POLITICAL CURRENT AFFAIRS The Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Fatos Nano, received yesterday in Tirana the special envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Xhan Khan, who is on a working visit to our country. During the meeting, the political and economic developments in Albania, the process of democratic reforms, and the possibilities of cooperation with international organizations were discussed. The Chairman of the Council of Ministers appreciated the UN's interest in the course of events in our country and expressed readiness to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The special envoy of the UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of stability, political dialogue, and respect for human rights for Albania's future. He praised the efforts being made to democratize the country's life and to improve the economic situation.

Within the framework of contacts held with representatives of state institutions and the country's political forces, the delegation of the United Nations held talks in Tirana concerning the economic, social, and political situation in Albania. During these meetings, issues related to humanitarian aid, the need for deep reforms, as well as the promotion of democratic processes were addressed. The delegation became directly acquainted with the country's economic difficulties, with the situation regarding the supply of the population, and with the necessity for closer cooperation with international organizations. The communiqué emphasizes that the UN will closely follow developments in Albania and will consider possible avenues of support in accordance with the country's priority needs.

The Chairman of the Presidium of the People's Assembly, Ramiz Alia, received the ambassador of Sana for talks on political developments and bilateral relations. The meeting expressed the desire to expand relations of cooperation and to strengthen mutual understanding.
