The village is heading toward a crossroads
– Article from Korça –
This is how a peasant from the village would put it if you asked him to define the current state of agriculture in the Korça district. He would not mention the delays in land distribution under the law. He would be preoccupied with a series of other problems. But the situation has become so bleak and despairing that I do not know what good it does to tell it. Others would ask: why, even after President Alia’s historic decree, have these problems still not been solved? Why are agricultural economies and cooperatives still producing without clear guidance? These and other questions are asked today by every honest villager. In the Korça district there are hundreds of families living with the anxiety of tomorrow. The land is being left fallow, tools are lacking, and fuel and spare parts are increasingly becoming an obstacle. In many villages the pace of work has begun to slow down. This is a warning bell. The peasant is waiting not only for land, but also for the means to work it. Otherwise, the reform remains half-finished. Under these conditions, dissatisfaction is growing. In some areas you hear voices saying that the state is withdrawing, that no one is coming to the aid of the farmer’s troubles. This perception is dangerous. Agriculture is the foundation of the country’s life and cannot be allowed to fall into chaos. Determination, organization, and prompt help are needed. In Korça there are capable people, good land, and work experience. But without clear decisions and without material support, the village really is heading toward a crossroads.
