The “umbrella” of privileges
The overthrow of totalitarian society and its replacement with a pluralist state. Even in today’s capitalism there cannot exist such a brutal restriction of civic freedom as still weighs on us as the bitter legacy of the former regime. The aim of reform is to build a new social order in which man is not a means, but an end in himself. If democratic changes remain at the level of declarations and if old privileges continue to be preserved under new “umbrellas,” then the people will not feel the justice of the transition. It is not enough to change the names of institutions if the same unjust relationship between citizen and power remains. A state ruled by law cannot be built on arbitrary exclusions, on unlimited immunities, and on a bureaucracy that considers itself untouchable. The demand for equality before the law is today the clearest test of political sincerity. Every unjustified privilege produces mistrust, moral revolt, and a crisis of representation. Reform is not decoration. It is a difficult process that requires sacrifice, transparency, and personal example. If the ruling classes ask society for patience, they must be the first to give up undeserved comforts. Only in this way can a new relationship of trust be created between the people and the institutions.
