WILL THIS BE A GRAND IDEA OR A REALITY? The entry into 1992, with a very bitter balance on the national political level, makes us look with anxiety and concern at the consequences of Albanian pluralism. We closed a year marked by fratricidal conflict, polarization and hatred, with a climate of distrust that has ruined society and divided it into camps. All this cannot but lead us to think that Albania needs reconciliation more than ever. If the year we have left behind was a year of harsh political battles, elections, clashes, accusations and disagreements, the year that has just begun must be a year of clarity and wisdom. We cannot move forward with the language of hatred, with exclusions, with political revenge. On the contrary, Albanians need to find common ground, the minimum basis of national agreement, in order to save the country from moral and economic ruin. Albania has entered a very difficult period. The economy is in deep crisis, unemployment and shortages are evident, institutions are wobbling, while people's hopes are often dimmed by uncertainty. In these conditions, the responsibility of the political class, the parties, the intellectuals and the citizens is even greater. Everyone must give up partisan egoism and the spirit of revenge. Great reconciliation does not mean forgetting the past, nor denying the truth. It means the ability to live together, to build the rule-of-law state, to create credible institutions and to put an end to the climate of political hysteria. Without this reconciliation, democracy remains fragile, while pluralism turns into a source of destruction. Dialogue, self-restraint and responsibility are needed. Political forces must understand that no one can build the new Albania alone. Only cooperation, respect for the opponent and placing national interest above partisan interest can make 1992 a year of hope. Will this be the year of great reconciliation? That depends on all of us. On the parties, on the state, on the citizens. It depends on the ability not to carry division any further, not to feed hatred any further. If we know how to rise above yesterday's hostilities, then this year can mark the beginning of a new era. Otherwise, we risk losing yet another historic opportunity.
