ONLY THOSE WHO FEAR THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE TAKE ANTI-DEMOCRATIC ACTIONS

Protest by the Party of Albania Aleksandër Këlliçi — Vito Minarolli Secretary of the Central Control Commission — Niko Nosi The Socialist Party of Albania firmly protests against the arbitrary arrest of Mr. Fatos Nano, former chairman of this party, deputy of the People’s Assembly and former prime minister, an arrest made on the order of Mr. Vilson Ahmeti. It considers this act an unprecedented attack against the political opposition, against pluralism and democracy, in order to achieve certain political objectives. It condemns this action as profoundly anti-democratic and arbitrary, resembling political revenge rather than a lawful act. Over these two years, our party has been continuously subjected to various political attacks. It is clear that once again the aim is to discredit the political opponent, at a time when the country is heading toward general elections. This is precisely the essence of the event as we see it. The Socialist Party of Albania expresses deep indignation over this act and calls on public opinion, political forces, state and judicial bodies not to become instruments of such arbitrary actions. It demands respect for the law, constitutional rights and democratic norms. This action worsens the political climate in the country, increases tension and undermines efforts for free and fair elections. The Socialist Party of Albania remains determined to defend, by all democratic means, its rights, and those of its members and representatives. It calls on all socialists, citizens and democratic forces to react calmly, but firmly, against any anti-democratic action and against any attempt to hinder the free expression of the will of the people. ALBANIA AT A CROSSROADS, DEMOCRACY OR DICTATORSHIP? ...

— Do not trust August, but trust work. — Words inspire us, examples open our eyes. — Are you flirting with us to restore order within a day?! AZEM HAJDARI — JUDGE ON THE BASIS OF FACTS, O PEOPLE! DEMOCRACY OR RIGHT-WING TERROR? Very close to the truth, in itself [?] the meaning, the meaning in itself, because the truth speaks through its example and does not need many words. It is the examples of yesterday and today that explain better than anything what democracy means and what political violence means. Instead of respecting democratic rules, dangerous tendencies are appearing toward arbitrariness, pressure and the use of force against the political opponent. This leads citizens to judge on the basis of facts and not slogans. The people want order, but not terror; want law, but not revenge; want calm, but not the stifling of free speech. Any attempt to frighten the opponent, to subjugate institutions and to intimidate ordinary people is the wrong path. At this crossroads Albania must choose between real democracy and diktat. History will judge not words, but deeds.

By Vjosa The newspaper burners If they do not want to use their heads and continue with these hooliganisms, there will be even greater losses. Whoever attacks the free press attacks the freedom of speech and democracy itself. Let the public opinion judge who is afraid of free speech and who is trying to silence the opponent.
