ANTIFASCISM IS THE BEGINNING OF A MISSION

— The PS meeting in Tirana today, on 25 April, with people of the massacred — — The new line of left-wing politics and the victory of mass support — Who are the antifascists and what place do they occupy today in the building of the new society? What does the word antifascism and patriotism mean in pluralist Albania? How will our country move forward without the forces and the people who stood up against the occupiers and served as a moral example for generations? These questions and many others were at the center of yesterday’s meeting organized by the Socialist Party of Tirana with veterans, families of martyrs and participants in the national liberation war. The meeting took place in a warm atmosphere and with broad participation. In the speeches delivered, it was stressed that antifascism is not a relic of the past, but the foundation of a civic and political mission for the democracy, freedom and independence of the country. It was underlined that pluralism cannot serve to deny history, but to re-examine it honestly and free it from political misuse. PS representatives stated that the Albanian left must find its new language while preserving the ideals of social justice, equality and solidarity. According to them, the new political line must be based on openness to broad social groups, on dialogue with intellectuals, workers, the peasantry and youth, as well as on responsibility for the mistakes of the past. In the discussions, memories of the war and of numerous sacrifices were evoked, but also concerns about the climate that has emerged recently, where signs of disdain toward veterans and a relativization of the fascist evil can be seen. Speakers called for the new democratic state to be grounded in historical memory and in respect for those who fell for the country’s freedom. The meeting ended with the conviction that without a moral and historical axis, democracy remains fragile, while antifascism, as a civic culture and as the founding act of the modern Albanian state, remains the beginning of a mission that is still ongoing.

Pluralist deserters... buy cars

“No country is disappointment” AN JUGA ÇAST VJAFË... (?) (Photo: Niko Xhuku) Many had expected the new government to bring visible changes to citizens’ lives immediately. But, according to reports coming from the ground, disappointment is taking hold where expectations were greatest. From people who yesterday spoke of thrift and sacrifice, today one hears accusations of privileges, cars and misuse. In the note accompanying the photograph, it is pointed out that while many families can barely secure their daily bread, some new officials are behaving like victors who took power for personal gain. This climate does not serve democracy; instead, it drives citizens away from trust in institutions. Meanwhile, in public spaces and everyday conversations, the question is growing: was this the pluralism we wanted? If politics is identified with luxury and with the car, then it loses its moral meaning. AN JUGA ÇAST VJAFË...[?]

The government’s steps and the steps of reform

— Did the government exist? reform at a standstill — After lively discussions in various social circles, where alongside concern about the economic situation and everyday shortages there is also a growing demand for a faster pace of reforms, the question naturally arises about the relationship between governance and reform. The analyses carried out show that the new government has moved in several directions, but not always at the right speed. There are measures aimed at liberalizing the economy, but their implementation runs into administrative obstacles, lack of experience and political uncertainty. Thus, part of the reforms remain at a standstill, while the citizen waits for concrete solutions. One of the main reasons for this stagnation is seen in the lack of coordination among institutions, the unclear setting of priorities and the hesitation to make difficult decisions. Meanwhile, the social situation is worsening and the need is growing for protective measures for the hardest-hit groups. The article emphasizes that reforms cannot progress as mere slogans. They require stable institutions, a capable administration and political will. Otherwise, the government may seem to be moving, while reform remains still. (continued on page 9)

UNDERSTANDING

Today, hundreds of international delegations, non-governmental organizations, foundations, missions and institutions seeking to offer their assistance have established relations with Albania. This is a sign of interest in our country and in its democratic path. However, this assistance and this interest also require understanding, correctness and responsibility from all sides. Under conditions of a difficult economy and a state in transition, it is necessary for every relationship with foreigners to be based on clear legal and human norms. Understanding does not mean submission, but honest communication and mutual respect. Albania needs partners, not tutors. It needs assistance, but also dignity. Only in this way can lasting bridges of cooperation be built that serve reforms and the national interest. SH. M.
