ON THE MEETING BETWEEN THE PSSH REPRESENTATIVE
AND PRESIDENT BERISHA ABOUT THE DECISION
TO ABOLISH THE 80 PERCENT
Statement by the Socialist Party spokesman
In a statement by the PSSH spokesman it is said:
On 15.5.1992, in the premises of the Presidency, a meeting was held between the PSSH representative, Mr. Fatos Nano, and the President of the Republic, Prof. Sali Berisha.
At this meeting the discussion focused mainly on the country's economic problems, with the aim of resolving them through understanding and transparency, in the interests of the people and of democracy.
The PSSH representative and the President of the Republic agreed to abolish the 80-percent tax.
This necessary action will be followed by other government decisions in the economic field, which will directly affect lowering the cost of living, increasing agricultural and industrial production, and employment.
The Socialist Party welcomes this decision as a success of reason and political responsibility, as an important step toward easing social tensions and creating a climate of cooperation.
It regards this as the beginning of a useful dialogue in the interests of the country and ordinary people.

In order to get on the right track, the decision to abolish the 80-percent tax should be accompanied by economic, fiscal and productive measures so that immediate gaps and other consequences are avoided. The decision cannot remain only political.

The prime minister Aleksandër Meksi's candid statement in parliament, after the government's resignation, that I do not cooperate with PS specialists, was very quickly contradicted by the government offices. Over the past 72 hours he has made dozens of appointments to important posts of directors and deputy directors, replacing the old specialists with activists, young comrades and friends.
In our view, these actions undermine the very stated goal of transparency and create a partisan and unstable administration.

In Albania, the first 60 hours?
Durrës on an undeclared strike
From 60 hours of blockade in Durrës, the 80-percent tax in the state budget will bring serious consequences. In the city, productive, commercial and transport activities have been interrupted and the nervousness is growing.
Durrës is an important node of the national economy, and any prolonged halt of work there is immediately reflected throughout the country.

THE WELFARE WORKER REMAINS
"WITH FINGER IN MOUTH"
The purpose of the 80-percent tax was, according to the government, to increase budget revenues. But in practice it has hit the poor hardest, especially the welfare worker, who can barely make ends meet.
In conditions of unemployment and rising prices, this fiscal policy falls directly on the most vulnerable.
