LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS ARE OF EXTRAORDINARY IMPORTANCE By circulating the opinion about the possibilities of the Socialist Party to emerge victorious on 16 June in the general elections, as has happened in many cases, this party has not fully enjoyed the result, since it is not able to administer local government effectively. The local government elections constitute a decisive factor for the country’s democratic stabilization and for carrying out reforms at local level. In the city of Vlora, as well as in Gjirokastër and in many other areas of the country, Socialist organizations are mobilizing to present candidates with integrity and the ability to cope with the community’s problems. Experience to date has shown that local administration is weak when political and civic support is lacking. The Socialist Party of Albania must work tirelessly to get closer to citizens and win their trust. Only in this way can broad participation in the elections and the proper implementation of the reform program be ensured. Local government is not merely an administrative matter; it concerns people’s daily lives, supply, housing, services, education, and culture. In this sense, these elections have extraordinary importance. They will prove the democratic maturity of the political forces and their ability to cooperate in the interest of citizens. If PS is able to present real alternatives and the right candidates, then victory will not be only numerical, but also political and moral. (Continues on page 2 )
