THE SOCIALIST PARTY — A BALANCED, DEMOCRATIC ALTERNATIVE ESSENTIAL FOR THE BALANCED DEVELOPMENT OF ALBANIAN LIFE

Excerpts from the speech by comrade Fatos Nano at the first Conference of the Socialist Party of the Korçë district In the first year of Albanian political pluralism, alongside the forces of the right and especially the Democratic Party, the political left has also crystallized and developed, organized in the Socialist Party of Albania. It emerged at a time when Albania was moving from a dramatic past toward the future and when working people and broad popular strata were experiencing insecurity, fear, upheaval, wavering, and major economic and social difficulties. The Socialist Party is not a return to the past. It is the expression of the need for a balanced democratic alternative, for a necessary equilibrium in Albanian political life, for the protection of the interests of labor, of ordinary citizens, and of those strata most vulnerable to the shocks of the transition. We believe that democracy cannot be built on political revenge, on artificial divisions, on demagoguery, or on unkept promises. Democracy requires stable institutions, genuine pluralism, a culture of dialogue, and respect for the political opponent. In this sense, the Socialist Party represents a serious, responsible, and realistic alternative. At a time when economic difficulties are numerous, when production has fallen, when unemployment is increasing, when market supply remains uncertain, and when the countryside and the cities feel the burden of a prolonged transition, it is essential to offer considered solutions, not political adventures. Albania needs balanced development, social peace, measured reforms, and broad civic participation. The Socialist Party addresses workers, peasants, intellectuals, youth, and women; it addresses all those who seek democratic order, social security, the rule of law, and social justice. We believe that without these elements there can be no successful Albanian path toward Europe. Our alternative is one of democratic reform, private property, and a market economy, but linked to social responsibility and to the state's duty not to abandon the citizen. We cannot accept poverty, insecurity, and inequality becoming the new norms of Albanian life. Within this framework, we have the duty to organize ourselves better, to be closer to the people, to listen to their concerns, and to build programs grounded in reality. The Party must enter into close and direct contact with the people, because its program is not merely political but deeply human: the defense of the interests of the unprotected. The first Conference of the Socialist Party of the Korçë district shows that this political force is consolidating and assuming responsibility for becoming a factor of stability, modernization, and democratic progress in the country.

In the first year of the Socialist Party of Albania

It must be considered in comparison with the first Conference of the PPSH held in Korçë, thinking about how many things separate us from that day and from the concrete conditions, burdened with major economic and social difficulties, but also with many democratic expectations. We have entered a period in which the new political structures are seeking to consolidate and in which Albanian society feels the need for a fairer and more balanced representation. It is clear that the Socialist Party of Albania today represents not only a certain political legacy, but also an effort to reform itself, to adapt to the new conditions of pluralism, and to be a genuine, responsible opposition force.

CHRONICLE

Yesterday at 11:03:22 in the morning, A. Ç., 24 years old, residing in Korçë, stabbed to death the 26-year-old man from the PPSH. According to witnesses, a quarrel over trivial motives led to the serious crime. Investigations are ongoing. In the city of Korçë, another meeting was also held yesterday with representatives of social organizations and youth, where the situation of public order and the social problems of the area were discussed. U.V., at the end of a second meeting in the premises of the PPSH, where the problems of agricultural cooperatives, the market, and supply were also addressed. The short chronicle of the day bears witness to a burdened and troubled reality, where, alongside political activities, serious criminal घटनाएँ are also not lacking.

The first Conference of the Socialist Party in Devoll

(Continues on page 4) Wherever they went and spoke, the participants were of the opinion that the new socialist organization should be capable of representing the interests of labor and of the strata most affected by the economic crisis. In Devoll, the need for a constructive and responsible opposition was discussed, along with the protection of the agricultural producer and the opening of the path to democratic reforms. The participants stressed that without a clear organizational structure and without direct links to the electorate, no political force can claim a serious role in public life. The problems of supply, emigration, and the need to preserve order in the area were also discussed.

40 PEOPLE ON HUNGER STRIKE

A BIG PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED In the city premises yesterday, representatives of families seeking a solution to a long-delayed property and housing issue gathered. According to them, for months the institutions have given no answer and as a result 40 people have gone on a hunger strike. The situation is serious and immediate intervention is required. The representatives stated that they will not end the protest without an official guarantee that the matter will be examined. Police forces were also seen at the scene, as well as interest from citizens. (Continues on page 4)

WHAT SOCIALISM ARE WE PRAYING FOR?

(Continues on page 2) By socialism, in the sense in which we are speaking, one must understand neither a copy of failed real socialism nor a return to a centralized system. It is a matter of a social democratic project that places the human being, freedom, social justice, and solidarity at its center. In Albania, the experience of recent years has shown that uncontrolled transition produces serious consequences for the vulnerable strata. Therefore, the question of socialism is a question about the social state, about a market economy with responsibility, about the protection of labor, and about a more equal society. This is not about a slogan, but about programmatic orientation.
