THE GOVERNMENT ANTI-REFORM IS EXPECTED WITH CONCERN AND WITH THE BASIC QUESTION: WILL WE HAVE BREAD?

The network echoes the good things the people will have if prices rise; what becomes expensive and difficult stays beyond reach Observation Where did the government begin? — prices above all? Have people gotten used to decisions? Is that what they call reform? Or are prices supposed to come before wages? First? First? First? Who knows. These are disorienting days. Very expensive ones, while citizens ask in queues outside shops and bakeries: what about tomorrow? the day after tomorrow? Will we have bread? In the city, in the countryside, in the neighborhoods and in the queues it is the same questions. This is how the wave of price increases has been received. What is called reform does not enter people’s lives as reform. It comes as fear, as anxiety, as an impossible calculation. In the market and in the streets there is talk that prices will bring abundance, that the producer will be encouraged, that the trader will be supplied. But so far the citizen sees only that wages remain the same, pensions too, while bread, oil, sugar, milk, detergents and every other everyday necessity crack down on the poor table. How is a family to be sustained? How is peace to be maintained? That is the basic question. Clerks, pensioners, workers, housewives, unemployed young people and the elderly all ask where the government will begin in order to make this reform credible. With a rise in prices or with a rise in social protection? With words or with bread?

Joke or what?

The Socialist Party, which apparently is overcoming the obstacles, continues its internal life vigorously. It recently decided to come out in defense of the government—unfortunately, because it was risking the loss of a new ally. The answer it gave to the many harsh voices that filled the squares of Tirana and other cities was almost blunt. It seems that these days everyone has found their voice and is asking: what are you defending? The government or the citizen? It looks as if words are being played with. One speaks of reforms, another of sacrifices, a third of patience. Meanwhile ordinary life slides toward an insecurity that no slogan can cover. In this sense, the question of whether we are dealing with a joke or with responsible politics remains open.

Diagnosis and therapy make up a unity

LETTER TO MR. PRESIDENT ... and the doctor must know this well. Therefore, for successful treatment, the diagnosis must be precisely established. In this sense, let us look a little at the cause of today’s evil. Today the country is in a grave economic condition. There is no production, goods are lacking, family life has worsened, and the ties of many enterprises have been broken. In the countryside there are no means, in the cities there is no work, while in the administration responsibility is often lacking. That is the diagnosis. Therapy cannot begin by striking the weakest. With this logic, a rise in prices without accompanying measures, without support for producers and consumers, without an increase in wages and pensions, without a guaranteed minimum supply, further worsens the situation. A serious state must know how to heal and not deepen the wound.

Television under strain

Like yesterday, the medium has begun to present itself before the public with a distinct voice on the country’s atmosphere and everyday life. But what stands out most is that one-sided explanation often replaces information, and genuine debate appears only rarely. On screen there is talk of reforms, sacrifices and expectations, but not enough is said about citizens’ anxiety, empty markets, queues and low wages. Instead, long and tiresome reports are sometimes aired that divert attention from the problem. The public expects something else: clarity, moderation, argument, responsibility.

The prime minister promises, but the government doesn’t want to know

(To be continued on page 4) It is more surprising and more difficult to be deep than to be in all the prices. Karlo 93.

PROTEST of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Albania

Sincerity and solidarity have also begun to appear in this structure. Yesterday protests and expressions of discontent were held in many districts against the latest decisions. People demanded bread, work, wages, pensions, and justice in bearing the burden of reform. The statements made emphasized that the people alone cannot bear the burden of government mistakes. Citizens were particularly struck by the fact that decisions are made without real dialogue with the groups concerned. Protest demands listening, not disregard.

The buses “wait” for passengers

PANEVRA SKËNDI Urban and interurban transport problems are becoming more serious. People wait a long time at stops, vehicles are lacking or overloaded, timetables are not respected. On some routes buses pass infrequently and passengers are forced to stand for hours. This causes nervousness and loss of time for hundreds of citizens who have to go to work, school or hospitals. Often the vehicles are worn out and in poor condition. Even when they arrive, they are not enough. The passenger does not expect luxury, but order, punctuality and a minimum service. So far it seems as if the buses “wait” for passengers and not the other way around.

“Persecuted” Skanderbeg

The history in the reconstruction of the PS — It is considered that history is not made by decree, nor by anathemas. That seems to be what is happening with the way Skanderbeg’s name is being used in the debates of the day. Instead of his figure serving unity and national awareness, it is being dragged into small party quarrels. History cannot be rewritten every time the majority changes, nor replaced by labels. Skanderbeg does not need “defenders” who use him according to the interest of the moment. This is another indication that today’s crisis is not only economic, but also moral and cultural.
