PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA ZHELYU ZHELEV VISITS ALBANIA

Short biography The President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev, was born on 3 March 1935 in the village of Veselinovo in the province of Shoumen. From 1949 to 1953 he completed secondary school in Jambol. In 1953 he began higher studies at the University of Sofia, philosophy branch, but because of his critical views toward the communist regime he was expelled in 1958. Later he continued his studies by correspondence and in 1964 graduated in philosophy. From 1961 to 1964 he worked as a village teacher. In the years 1964-1972 he worked as a journalist and meanwhile continued postgraduate study at the Institute of Culture of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1974 he defended his dissertation for the scientific degree of doctor in philosophy with the topic “The philosophical definition of matter and modern physical consciousness.” In 1965 his book “Fascism” was banned from publication and its contents were destroyed. For this reason, in 1975 he was expelled from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1982 his work “Fascism” was published, becoming very well known and translated into several foreign languages. In 1988 Zhelyu Zhelev became one of the founders of the “Club for support of glasnost and perestroika.” On 7 December 1989 he was elected chairman of the Union of Democratic Forces of Bulgaria. On 1 August 1990 the Grand National Assembly elected him President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
