For this reason, in 1975 he was expelled from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1982 his work “Fascism” was published, becoming very well known and translated into several foreign languages. In 1988 Zhelyu Zhelev became one of the founders of the “Club for support of glasnost and perestroika.” On 7 December 1989 he was elected chairman of the Union of Democratic Forces of Bulgaria. On 1 August 1990 the Grand National Assembly elected him President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
