IN THE PRESENCE OF THE POLICE, THE LIFE OF THE HEAD OF THE POJAN COMMUNE IN BERAT IS ASSAULTED AND ENDANGERED

An arson attack is also warned of Yesterday around 11:30 in the village of Ura Vajgurore in the Berat district, unidentified persons, while driving a “Benz” car, struck the head of the Pojan commune, Verip Veripi, with blunt objects; he had taken part in carrying out the decision of the commission for the return of property and land. Afterwards, the same persons fired at him with a weapon. By sheer chance he escaped without being injured. According to witnesses, the incident took place in the presence of police forces, who did not intervene to neutralize the aggressors. In his statement to the newspaper, Verip Veripi links this act to the conflicts created during the implementation of the land law and to the pressure exerted by various elements on local government bodies. He states that he was also threatened with having his house burned down. From the information we received, members of the land distribution commission and local government bodies have often become the target of threats. Yesterday’s घटना represents a serious act and requires immediate clarification. In the past, parliament used to shine in the culture of its people, in moral purity and purity of speech, in the wisdom of its decisions, in the maturity of its position. Today it has more and more turned into an arena of insults, abuse, and clashes. Instead of argument, one hears shouting; instead of culture, coarse language; instead of political ethics, uncontrolled anger. This bleak picture of parliamentary life cannot but worry every citizen who feels themselves part of this society. Parliament cannot be the grave of democratic hope. It must return to being an institution of debate, legality, and public responsibility. Otherwise, the consequences will be felt in the daily life of the country.
