COMMUNIQUÉ
OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY OF ALBANIA
At its meeting of 24 August, the Presidency of the Socialist Party of Albania examined the events of recent days and the latest political developments in the country.
As for the PSSH organization in Vlorë and the dishonest propaganda being carried out against it in connection with unproven actions and events, the Presidency of the PSSH condemned with the greatest severity every act of violence and illegality, just as it has condemned and continues to condemn every manifestation of extremism, anarchy, and political intolerance. It considered the involvement and implication of the PSSH in them to be entirely a fabrication without real basis, made for specific political purposes.
The Presidency of the PSSH called on its organization in Vlorë and its structures to maintain composure and political maturity in order to confront this politically motivated campaign against it. It reaffirmed the PSSH's determination to be a force for stability, for the democratization of the country's life, and for progressive change.
The Presidency of the PSSH considers condemnable the climate created toward the socialist opposition and its members, especially in conditions where its representatives are being attacked verbally and physically and where, through the press and other media, there is an attempt to identify the opposition with violence and destabilization.
The Presidency of the PSSH assessed that the worsening of the political situation does not serve the solution of the country's major economic and social problems. It called for state institutions to act responsibly, on the basis of the law, and not to allow the political exploitation of events.
In this context, the Presidency of the PSSH expresses concern over the use of double standards in the treatment of political forces and citizens. It calls on public opinion and all political actors to contribute to calming the situation and to the normal democratic development of the country.

All the facts show that we are dealing with persecution for political purposes
- MEP J. Evans sends questions to the foreign ministers of the European Community -
Brussels, 24 August [?]
Member of the European Parliament J. Evans has sent the foreign ministers of the European Community a question concerning the latest developments in Albania and the treatment being given to the Socialist Party.
In his question he expresses concern that the facts show we are dealing with persecution for political purposes and asks for information on whether the ministers are aware of these developments and what stance they will take.
He underlines the importance of respecting political rights and democratic standards in Albania and calls for events not to be used to strike at the opposition.
MP Evans's question was made public at a time when political tensions in Albania have risen sharply.

Political repression against the Socialist Party continues
Exercises in rebuttal
WHY ARE YOU HURRYING, O SULÇE?
I'll answer you precisely...
[?] Today's Sulçe publishes:
"The Socialist Party of Albania considers the climate created toward the socialist opposition and its members condemnable..."
And it goes on with comments and distortions. The author tries to defend a position unsupported by facts and to justify the attacks on the socialists.
Instead of dealing with the essence of the problem, he chooses the path of quick polemics and insinuations. Hence the question arises: why are you hurrying, o Sulçe?
His article brings no new argument, only repeats accusations and labels. This helps neither political calm nor democratic debate.
In the end, what remains is the need for moderation, for respect for the law, and for equal treatment of all political forces.
