THE TRAINING OF THE PARTY’S “HENCHMEN,” WITH 3-MONTH COURSES, SHOWS HOW MUCH HUMAN RIGHTS ARE AT RISK IN ALBANIA

- Unprecedented paradoxes in justice! - “You can speak and publicly declare the independence of the judiciary and play around with the cards of the constitution, and yet remain the same person: the servile man, the man of yesterday’s dictatorship, contemptuous of human rights. Some call it harmless to ask where someone works and what sort of head he has; others call it reactionary, or why not, fascist. That does not matter at all. But if, in the course of a trial, such a person punishes free thought as a crime, we cannot remain silent. At the same time, we must call out loudly and insistently in the name of the law. That is also the substance of the question we addressed to the chairman of the right-wing party, Mr. Sali Berisha. A few months ago he selected the judges of ‘democracy,’ despite the fact that the independence and depoliticization of the judiciary were part of the very essence of the legal reform. He selected them one by one, by examining each name individually, with a constitution that was not consulted at all. On the other hand, he speaks and pretends to worry about human rights. What rights are these? Only the rights of those who support the current regime? And what about the rights of the others? Of those who think differently? What are these people—enemies? Delinquents? Excluded from society? It is precisely these questions that come to light through the way the “training” of legal professionals is being carried out with 3-month courses. Albania cannot build a state governed by law with party schemes and militant soldiers dressed in the robes of judges or prosecutors. Justice is not a party unit. A person who knows a little law and a lot of political command is a danger to the citizen’s freedom. Human rights are not defended through ideological servility, but through professionalism, character, legal culture, and independence from power. Instead of moving forward with standards, with deep education, with experience and proven honesty, the process is being driven forward with haste and political lists. That is why our concern is not accidental. Anyone who wants to see how impaired the right remains today should look at these “courses.” They are a clear sign of how much human rights are at risk in Albania.

The previous government's friendship and care for friends

The previous government's friendship and care for friends Two emigrants in Greece write to “Zëri i Popullit” Two Albanian villagers, Mr. Sali Asllani, 45 years old, from the village of Mbrostar-Ura, Fier, and Asllan Haxhiu, 42 years old, from the village of Zhapokikë, Berat, send a letter to the editorial office of “Zëri i Popullit,” publicly denouncing the fate of their relatives, who are serving unjust sentences in Greece. They state that these relatives are in prison for dubious reasons and through unjust proceedings. According to the authors of the letter, the case is serious and requires the attention of the Albanian state. Instead of caring for these emigrants and pursuing the matter through legal and diplomatic channels, the government behaves indifferently. The letter emphasizes that the official institutions have not done enough and that the family members feel abandoned. “Window, from the life and work of the deputy” From communist integrist to fundamentalists (Continues on page 8) VALTER XHINI

The Albanian Social Primore Party officially opened its electoral campaign yesterday. The newly created political organization is addressing a letter to the president of the republic, Mr. Sali Berisha. It states that the leadership of this party will organize a large meeting with the people on Sunday in the premises of the “Asllan Rusi” sports palace. The letter says that the president of the republic, as the head of a particular party, is conducting political campaigning with the means and attributes of the state. Its authors demand that state institutions not be used for party interests and state that the political climate is becoming more tense. They consider this a violation of equality in the electoral race and call on the head of state to respect democratic standards.
