NO COMMENT A woman harnessed to a harrow By the roadside, a woman was pulling a harrow to break up the soil. A woman harnessed in place of an animal was pulling the harrow at the entrance to Cangonj, where Devoll and Korçë meet. But this was not what caught the travelers’ attention. People pulling harrows is the most ordinary sight in the Devoll plain. A child aged 3–4 was sitting on the harrow. Instead of a stone, a child was serving as a weight for the mother to compact the soil. Opinions were divided. Is it because there is no stone, or because the child enjoys the ride?! In Devoll, at the end of the 20th century, the land is worked by hand. That needs no comment. Children amuse themselves—hanging out in rain and sunshine while waiting for the modern nurseries and kindergartens promised by the Democratic Party. Modest facilities of the time, now ruined and abandoned, seem to stand as an accusation. That too needs no comment.

we are not publishing their speeches (READ IN TOMORROW’S ISSUE) The DP’s Byzantine policy toward the SP has failed Meetings with residents of the city of Kukës by MPs Kastriot Islami and Musa Ulqini - More than a thousand citizens of Kukës filled the large hall of the Palace of Culture at the meeting organized with MPs Kastriot Islami and Musa Ulqini on the afternoon of April 30. During the discussion, which lasted a full three hours, those present, many of them young people, listened with keen interest to the MPs’ views on the tense political situation today, as well as their answers to more than 100 questions from the audience. Commenting on the situation in Kukës, and especially on the intellectuals’ invitation to the MPs in question, MP Kastriot Islami began his remarks by emphasizing that he and his colleague had been deeply shaken by the massacre recently carried out by Serbian chauvinists on the northern border, but had also been greatly moved by the courageous stance of the five families of the victims from the municipality of Bardhoc, whom they had visited to offer condolences that day. MP Islami then spent nearly an hour expressing his assessments and positions as an intellectual on the actions of the socialist parliamentary groups and the current political situation. A year after the Democratic Party came to power, the MPs stressed, Albania’s economic, political, and social situation has changed for the worse and is far from what ordinary people expected when they believed the bombastic election promises. Unable to bring the country out of its difficult situation, and lacking the civic courage to face public opinion over the bombastic election promises that are not being fulfilled, the DP is trying to divert people’s attention from their hardships by waging a political campaign against the SP. The aim is clear: the DP’s powerful propaganda machine has manipulation as its principle and political confusion of the people as its objective, so that they will not see the real destruction of their livelihoods. The MPs cited numerous examples, already familiar to public opinion, of actions and positions by those currently in power that have been considered anti-democratic both inside and outside the country. The DP’s current campaign against the opposition is being waged by Byzantine methods, MP Islami went on to emphasize. Who is afraid of QEMAL STAFA? The small plaque on which his name was written and which had been placed on the bust’s pedestal had a star in the middle. At first they attacked the star, trying to wipe away the red paint. Could Qemal’s star have frightened them?! Later they defaced the plaque with black paint, trying at all costs to make it an unintelligible mess. Could Qemal’s name be frightening them now? They carried out the third attack by striking the back of the bust’s head, managing to break off a piece. Could Qemal’s sharp gaze have frightened them?! But even that was not enough for the night’s scoundrels. They attacked for a fourth time and this time managed to mutilate the bust, breaking its head completely. Today it looks like a bird of prey. This is what ha- ... ... happened in Shkodër to the bust of the People’s Hero Qemal Stafa. Who was afraid of this bust, and why? We do not know. We know only that Qemal Stafa harmed no one and owed nobody anything. Now the pedestal is left with a headless statue. But who knows, perhaps one day they will remove it altogether. In fact, they would do better to do that than leave it this way, desecrated, since no one has remembered or is remembering to repair it. What a disgrace! In the middle of civilized Shkodër, this ugly act against Qemal Stafa, symbol of May 5, Martyrs’ Day, has taken place. This happened in 1992, the year of the 50th anniversary of his death; today is May 5, 1993. Qemal Stafa, killed five times. MUSA KURTULAJ In remembrance of May 5 On the occasion of May 5, the executive committee of the war veterans ... ... and the families of the martyrs of the city of Korçë. The commemorative address was delivered by Kosta Uçi, a member of the district veterans’ committee. May 5, he said, among other things, is a significant day. The Albanian people, veterans, young men and women bow in reverence before the blood of their sons and daughters, who gave their lives for the most precious thing, Albania’s freedom. He then spoke about the great contribution made by those who took part in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. May 5 calls on us to honor the fighters for freedom, and in doing so to honor ourselves and Albania. At the meeting, speeches were also made by Fazlli Shahinasi, chairman of the Korçë district veterans’ committee, family members of the martyrs, and others. During the meeting, high praise was expressed for the deeds of the fallen, and anti-democratic, revanchist, and violent attitudes toward the symbols of the war, commemorative plaques, memorials, etc., were discussed. The distortion of the great National Liberation War by certain political forces as merely a civil war was also described as an act of violence, since that amounts to completely denying the blood of the fallen. Kostaq Duka, chairman of the Socialist Party of the Korçë district, also delivered greetings at the meeting.
