“WITH THIS GOVERNMENT
WE CAN NO LONGER GO ON”
MASS RALLY IN BERAT ATTENDED BY
OVER 15,000 PEOPLE
- The deputies of the movement “know in the people.” While the “deputies of the people” are hiding in their burrow,
- The politics of Berat, mired in policing operations, Kuvorev etc., this time kept a dog.
- The government of the PD
is correct!
Last Tuesday at 6:00 in the evening,
that afternoon, the people of Berat from the
neighborhoods of “Kala,” “Mangalem”
and “30-Vjetori” set out toward the city
center, where at 7:00 p.m. the rally of
the Socialist Party of the city was scheduled
to take place. On the paved road, where
municipal builders had hurriedly placed the
barrier of the roundabout, the road police
were blocked by 2 army trucks with armored
vehicles, 4 police cars and dozens of police
officers. This was their “scenario” against
the rally, fortunately a failed one, despite
the great effort.
The center itself, near the House of Culture,
was surrounded by metal barriers and by
numerous police officers. But the square
filled with citizens, men, women and
children, young men and women, even
babies. Many people, because of the large
number, could not enter the square and
remained gathered around the building.
According to the organizers’ estimate, more
than 15,000 people took part in this rally.
The rally was opened by the chairman of the
Socialist Party in the city, Mr. Fadil Ylli, who
said that the people of Berat, with this
participation, are giving the best answer to
today’s government, the government of
misery, by telling it “Enough already!” He
valued this popular act as proof of the power
of popular unity and the strength of the
movement “Enough” in Berat.
Then the socialist MP Shefqet Peçi spoke
about the role of the Laboratory of Fear that
the state and its propagandists are trying to
provoke, filling the city with police and forces
brought in from the districts, with armored
vehicles and weapons. “But,” he said,
“the people of Berat broke this scenario
through their participation.”
Former prime minister and Berat deputy
Fatos Nano said in his speech that “Berat,
the city of a thousand and one windows,
has lit the lights of resistance and the
windows of freedom.” He said that the
opposition is fighting to save the country
from the economic abyss and to restore
democracy, true pluralism, and respect for
the law and the state. “We want a government
with a broad national base, to stop the
catastrophe and to reconsider the vote of 22
March 1992, the results of which under equal
conditions would never be what they are
today.”
He said that “we can no longer go on with
this government” and that “the people are
calling for a political solution and not
repression.”
At the end, slogans were shouted and cheers
were raised for democracy, social justice and
the resignation of the government.

At the government’s request, let the social and economic course be changed

At the government’s request, let the social
and economic course be changed
(Press conference of the chairman of the
Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of
Albania, Mr. Azuko Asllanaj)
To learn about the demands of the Albanian
trade union movement, yesterday a press
conference was organized at the premises of
the association “Adriatikut” in Tirana,
where Mr. Azuko Asllanaj, chairman of the
K.S.P.SH., gave clarifications. During it, he
said that the social line in the shaping of the
economy is being deepened. He also stressed
that “the proper balance of consumption with
production in favor of people and labor, and
not capital, must be restored.” For this reason
he said that “there can be no social peace in
Albania without job security and social
security.” According to him, measures such
as the minimum wage and pensions remain
insufficient.
The union leader then turned to his criticism
of the policy pursued by the government.
“The current economic policy,” he said,
“forces Albanian citizens to sell their household
furniture, slaughter their domestic animals
and uproot fruit trees in order to secure a
livelihood. This is happening not only in the
countryside, but also in the city.” He said that
the government must correct its course,
review its relations with the IMF and the World
Bank, and that it “cannot blindly rely on
imported recipes.”
He also said that the absence of a strike law
makes trade union action difficult and that
workers feel unprotected. The unions,
according to him, will use all democratic forms
to defend the rights of their members.

CENSOR?
Precisely, the Democratic Party and the usurper state and institution are being sensitized and, to many,
the victim of the social daily life of the month of
May 1993
In the quiet and apparent calm of the meeting
rooms of the city of Berat, yesterday took place
the next meeting of the local leaders of the
Socialist Party with citizens. Their words focused
on the serious economic and social crisis and on
the government’s inability to provide a way out
for the country.
The speakers denounced the pressure exerted by
the administration on the participants and said
that citizens are losing faith in the government’s
promises. They called for political elections and
respect for citizens’ rights.

A JUDGE IN SHKODËR IS THREATENED
Regarding a statement in the front-page column
of the newspaper “Mbrëmja,” written in high
prose with attorney Aleksandër Papsameti and
Judge Bujar Shkoza regarding a social party and
the protest of 15 May in the city of Shkodër,
pressure has been exerted on a judge of this
district. The persons who threatened him have
been identified and are being investigated by
the relevant authorities.
According to sources, the judge had handled a
sensitive case related to public gatherings and
the demands of the opposition. The threat has
been considered an unacceptable act against
the independence of justice.
The president of the court requested institutional
protection for judges and punishment for those
responsible.
Korçë, one more step for the voice of the people.
How long must we endure, Albanians?
Let them keep quiet about crime, while we
shout, so that the world sees that we are being
deceived.
Young people are leaving, people are becoming
poorer, and the voice of the people is calling for
justice.
Workers and peasants,
bear the burden of this transition.
But who hears us? Who speaks for us?
