FATOS NANO MUST BE RELEASED FROM PRISON

The European Parliament offers a chance to the Albanian authorities: Any other position is biased, immoral and unlawful. The manipulation and alteration of the charges, linked to transactions and directed by the word order, once again proves that the “Nano case” is political. The clear message from the president of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Leo Tindemans, addressed to the President of the United States and the Albanian government, has been highly significant for the authorities keeping Mr. Fatos Nano in prison. In this message, which follows below, the president of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Leo Tindemans, is clear in his demand for the release of Mr. Fatos Nano. Indeed, he goes further by explaining that Mr. Nano’s case is political and has obvious implications for the Albanian political climate and its relations with Europe. By making this message public, we are convinced that Mr. Berisha and his government cannot remain silent nor disregard such a message with such immediate political relevance. Otherwise, our public opinion and the international one will be even more convinced that the trial against Mr. Nano and his detention in prison have been, and remain, an arbitrary and political act. Mr. Leo Tindemans’s message was sent yesterday to President Clinton. Also yesterday, a copy of this message was sent to the U.S. embassy in Rome, its embassy in Tirana, and our office in Tirana. The message has the following content: His Excellency President Bill Clinton The White House Washington Dear Mr. President, I am writing to you in my capacity as chairman of the Group of the European Socialist Party (PES) in the European Parliament to make known our concern regarding the case of Mr. Fatos Nano, chairman of the Albanian Socialist Party. Since October 1993 Mr. Nano has been held in prison, while the legal proceedings against him have been repeatedly postponed. We consider the prolonged delay in this process unjustified, especially given the nature of the charges brought against him. From the very beginning of this case we have expressed our serious doubts about its political nature. The repeated changes in the charges and the way the proceedings have unfolded so far have strengthened our conviction that this is a case motivated by politics. We consider unacceptable attempts to isolate or discredit the leaders of the opposition in Albania through judicial and administrative means. This does not serve the strengthening of democracy and the rule of law in Albania. Within this framework, we ask you to use your influence with the Albanian authorities to make possible the immediate release of Mr. Nano and to guarantee a fair and impartial trial. Respectfully, Leo Tindemans Chairman of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament

The Democratic Party is frightened by fair competition

A concrete and realistic alternative, the clearest sign of distancing from the past. Russia’s mature demagoguery in the economy cannot compete with the regime of the PD. Immoral and all-round. A concrete and realistic alternative, the clearest sign of distancing from the past. Russia’s mature demagoguery in the economy cannot compete with the regime of the PD. Immoral and all-round. In a brief response, the spokesperson of the Socialist Party denounced the efforts of the Democratic Party to distort the positions of the opposition and hide its failures in government. According to this response, fair political competition remains the only way to test alternatives before citizens. The statement emphasizes that the country needs real economic and social solutions, not propaganda. It underlines that fear of open debate and of confronting programs shows the insecurity of those in power. In conclusion, the Socialist Party reaffirms its commitment to genuine pluralism, the rule of law, and respect for the opposition.
