The prosecutor's stance - a document proving the innocence of Fatos Nano

THE PROSECUTOR'S STANCE - A DOCUMENT PROVING THE INNOCENCE OF FATOS NANO - Another chance for justice to prove that it still has at least some dignity, professional integrity, and independence from political power. - By Dr. Fëhmi Abdiu, deputy After harsh questions, after the prosecutor's many objections, Fatos Nano's lawyer produced the evidence, which only a sick mind could call fabricated. They accuse while condemning the accused without the accused... [text partly unreadable] In the trial against Fatos Nano, if a fair decision is to be made, then justice must free, not hold hostage, a man for political motives. The prosecutor has requested that he be sentenced to prison, but his request runs contrary to the evidence and to legal reason. If the prosecutor were to read the case file documents carefully, he would understand that the charges fall apart. There is no direct evidence linking Fatos Nano to the alleged criminal act. There are only assumptions, interpretations, and political intent. That is not enough to convict a man. What stands out in this process is the haste to reach a prearranged verdict. Everything suggests that the aim is not the truth, but a political example. Yet the court cannot be an instrument of power. It must be independent and based solely on the law. If the court has the courage to decide according to the law, then it will provide not only justice for Fatos Nano, but also hope for Albanian society that the rule of law can exist. Otherwise, this trial will remain as a heavy stain in the history of our justice system.

Berlusconi: election winner Home? The right wing led by billionaire television magnate Silvio Berlusconi emerged victorious, but one of its coalition parties, the Italian Social Movement, with neo-fascist roots, is unlikely to be selected. Members of the right-center of the opposing coalition for the first time since Italy became a republic after World War II. In fact, if the Italian Social Movement enters government, it will be the first time since Mussolini's downfall that neo-fascists will take part in government. Berlusconi's party, “Forza Italia”, won about 22 percent of the vote, thus becoming Italy's single largest party. The former communists and their allies won less than 35 percent of the vote in Sunday's general election. Meanwhile, the center-right alliance won about 44 percent. Under the new electoral system, which favors the winner, this gives the right wing a majority of seats in both the Senate and the lower house of parliament. The Italian financial markets greeted the right-wing victory calmly. The Italian lira and government bond prices remained unchanged. The first general elections in Italy in almost 50 years in which no center party won included various forms of participation by right-wing parties. The leader of the center-left coalition, Achille Occhetto, former head of the Italian Communist Party, said the result was “the victory of the right, but not of democracy.” The leader of the MSI, Gianfranco Fini, called the victory “an Italian miracle.”
