On the eve of the 45th anniversary, it is written that on May 1, 1886, the USA began the great demonstrations for an eight-hour workday and for the right to a better life. The bloody struggle, which in Chicago was carried out by workers for more humane working conditions, remained one of the most significant events in the history of the labor movement. Since then, May Day has become a day of solidarity for workers all over the world. What has happened in our country during these last years, with the destruction of production bases, unemployment, poverty, and disregard for the human rights of labor, makes the meaning of this day even more relevant. Albanian workers, like those everywhere in the world, need work, bread, dignity, and social protection. This day is a reminder that market freedom cannot be against the person who works, but must serve them. In Albania there is still much to be done to restore the dignity of labor, to respect trade-union rights, to ensure social and health security, and for the future of young people and working families. May Day remains a symbol of unity, of the demand for social justice, and of efforts for a better life for everyone. On this day, solidarity with workers, the unemployed, pensioners, and all those who feel the weight of the economic crisis takes on a special meaning.
