We denounce the devilish maneuvers to prevent veterans and the families of the martyrs of the anti-fascist national liberation war from commemorating 5 May
Statement by the National Committee of Veterans of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist War
Hundreds of high-level government officials continue to insult and humiliate veterans and the families of the martyrs, denying them the right to honor the fallen. In many cities and districts administrative obstacles, absurd orders and police pressure have been imposed to limit the 5 May ceremonies.
The National Committee of Veterans of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist War strongly condemns these actions, which run counter to democratic norms, national morality and the tradition of the Albanian people. No one can take away from veterans the lawful and human right to place flowers on the graves of the martyrs and to remember the sacrifices of the anti-fascist war.
Attempts to smear the National Liberation War and distort history will not succeed. Our anti-fascist war remains a bright page in Albanian history. Those who today seek to sow division and political hatred over the memory of the fallen bear grave moral responsibility.
We call on public opinion, social organizations and state institutions not to become part of this climate of obstacles and provocations. 5 May is a day of unity, honor and national reflection.
GLORY TO 5 MAY
HONOR AND GRATITUDE
TODAY IS 5 MAY, THE DAY OF THE MARTYRS
Today is a solemn day, because it is marked by two lofty and meaningful symbols for the Albanian people and our nation. First, this day marks the heroic fall of Qemal Stafa, the first martyr of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist War. Second, this day marks 5 May 1942, the day of the victory of Leningrad and the turning point of the Second World War against Nazi-fascism. In our popular memory, 5 May has become the day of all the martyrs of the homeland.
The graves of our fallen are the memorials and monuments where hopes and ideals have been imprisoned and clarified. Contemporary people often do not know how to measure the true extent of sacrifice, but time remembers it forever. The interrupted lives of the martyrs remain part of our national conscience.
May the memory of the sons and daughters who fell for the freedom of Albania be eternal. Today’s and future generations have the moral duty to bow with honor before their deeds, to defend the homeland, freedom and human dignity.
Today, on 5 May, the day of all our martyrs, we remember them with pain and pride, we bow before the blood that was shed and we bow in gratitude before their ideal.
