“THE NANO CASE” CALLS FOR A POLITICAL SOLUTION THAT WOULD OPEN THE WAY TO THE FUTURE OF DEMOCRACY
Press conference of the Socialist Party
DEMOCRACY HAS A LONG LIFE WHEN THE GOVERNMENT OF ARNIRRËNË UNDERSTAND IT [?]
Statement by Dr. Serve Pëllumbi, deputy chairman of the Socialist Party, at the press conference on Saturday, 28 May 1994
— At today’s conference we will clarify the Socialist Party’s position regarding the new accusations from the Tirana prosecutor’s office and the Court of Cassation concerning Mr. Fatos Nano. Instead of being based on facts and the law, the process is strengthening the conviction that the “Nano case” is being used politically to damage the Socialist opposition. The SP considers that the new accusations, as well as the course of the proceedings, do not serve the rule of law, but rather aim to hold the country’s political life hostage.
Under these circumstances, the Socialist Party reiterates that this issue requires a political solution, one that would open the way to the future of democracy. Democracy has a long life when governments and oppositions learn to respect one another, when institutions are not used against the political opponent, and when justice is not turned into a tool of pressure.
We believe that Albanian citizens want peace, justice, and equal rules for everyone. Therefore we call for the procedures to be carried out with transparency, with respect for legal rights, and without political prejudice. Only in this way can the country move forward, strengthening pluralism and trust in democracy.

...today, tomorrow an old man. Thanks to the efforts of people to get out of the economic and social crisis, the country needs a calmer political climate and reliable institutions. Instead of confrontation and labeling, dialogue and responsibility are required.
The SP reiterates that solutions cannot come from improvisation. They require honesty, professionalism, and an administration that serves the citizen. We present you with concrete development alternatives, not political handouts. Faced with the problems of unemployment, poverty, and the lack of order, public policies based on thought are needed, not propaganda.
If the government wants stability, it must accept political competition as a democratic value and the opposition as part of the system. Otherwise, the country risks wasting its energies in endless conflicts.

...This policy cannot continue by leaving society in insecurity and keeping the economy in permanent crisis. The government must account for broken promises and for failures in administration.
The Socialist Party states that sustainable development requires investment, production, and real support for the weakest layers. Rhetoric is not enough. Reforms with a social spirit, fiscal justice, and the protection of the public interest are needed.
This is the meaning of our alternative: a functional state, a productive economy, and a democracy in which the citizen feels represented.

For my fellow villagers, I leave my honesty as a pledge
...Speaks Sadik Alia, 35 years old, resident of the village [?]. He says that under difficult living conditions he has preserved his dignity and honesty, despite the hardships of the time. “For my fellow villagers, I leave my honesty as a pledge,” he says, underscoring that the trust of the community is the greatest wealth.
His account reflects the difficulties of the transition, the lack of work, and the efforts of a family to survive without giving up its principles.
