During the past two weeks, in a manner completely out of step with calls for the government to be removed while the economic market reform and Albania’s course toward European integration are being implemented, we have continuously been hearing from senior spokespeople of the ruling party demands for early parliamentary elections. The aim has nothing to do with consolidating democracy, but with an effort to impose, through political and propaganda means, a new climate of pressure on the opposition and on the institutions. Through the use of the state for party purposes, through control of the media, through pressure on the administration, and through the distortion of parliamentary rules, the PD is proving every day that it is incapable of governing under conditions of true pluralism. Instead of dealing with economic problems, unemployment, the decline in production, emigration, and the social condition of the population, it seeks to shift attention toward electoral adventures. This way of acting clearly shows that, at its core, no political solution for the country is being sought, but rather a new party advantage. Early elections, in this tense and one-sided climate, would not serve the country, but only strengthen the power of the PD. Albanian society needs stability, functioning institutions, and governance that respects the law, the opposition, and the public interest.
