INITIATIVES THAT SERVE NATIONAL INTERESTS DO NOT BELONG ONLY TO THE GOVERNMENT, BUT TO ALL POLITICAL FORCES

— Interview with the deputy chairman of the Socialist Party, Dr. Servet Pëllumbi — Income is now being invested better for the challenges ahead. It is a period of positive, evolving changes in international relations, which represents an important and beneficial opportunity for Albania. According to reports in recent days, it has been said and written that at the meeting with the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Martinez, the Albanian president, Mr. Berisha, presented a three-point plan for Kosovo. Can you confirm this, Mr. Pëllumbi? Are you clear about the content of this plan? As far as is known, although not officially, the Albanian president presented a three-point plan, which has been generally reported by the press, emphasizing that it could be a good basis for solving the Kosovo issue. According to this plan, the first point consists in recognizing the legitimate right of the Albanians of Kosovo to independence and their ability to determine their own fate. This right must be officially recognized by the international community. Second, an immediate end to Serbian violence and repression is required, together with the restoration of elementary political and human rights. Third, a peaceful solution is sought through dialogue and international mediation. Mr. Pëllumbi, is there a chance of broad agreement among Albanian political forces on these three points? I think yes. These are issues that concern national interests and do not belong only to the government, but to all political forces. On the contrary, for such issues, the broader the understanding and consensus, the stronger the country’s position becomes on the international stage. On the other hand, it is important to avoid hasty or irresponsible statements that could damage the cause. There is a need for a more measured and coordinated stance. (Continued on page 2 )

A BANDIT WHO SHOULD BE BURNT IN GUVO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

“Impressions” from a television chronicle! The public opinion concerned about the crimes and murders of Libofshë Prime Minister Meksi appears on TV indifferent to the marginal precedent “Impressions” from a television chronicle! The public opinion concerned about the crimes and murders of Libofshë Prime Minister Meksi appears on TV indifferent to the marginal precedent If you ask the ordinary person about last night’s television “spectacle,” which showed the police work to uncover a series of murders in Libofshë, he prefers to end the conversation with an expression: “A bandit should be burnt in guvo as soon as possible!” This harsh reaction from public opinion is understandable in the face of a chronicle that, instead of reassuring citizens, deepened the feeling of insecurity. The murders and robberies that occurred in Libofshë, the way they were handled, and the images served by television create the impression of an alarming situation. Just as shocking was the way Prime Minister Meksi appeared, with a kind of calm that clashed with the seriousness of the event. Instead of a strong state message, one saw a cold, almost indifferent attitude toward a precedent that endangers public order and the lives of citizens. In these circumstances, public opinion is asking for more than a television report: it expects action, responsibility, and punishment of the perpetrators. VERZHUESI

The police are there to protect people, not to kill them

In these days, after so many serious events, people expect security and calm from the law enforcement agencies, not violence and arbitrariness. What happens when the police exceed their authority is not only a violation of the law, but also a moral wound to society. It is essential that the police forces understand that their duty is to protect citizens’ lives, not to threaten them. Every case of abuse must be investigated seriously and transparently, so that public trust is not further undermined. JAHO LLAZI

Notes that cost only two thousand lira

IAKT In recent days, postage stamps with a value of 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 lekë dedicated to the 50th anniversary of liberation have been put into circulation. The difference from the previous series lies in the fact that each one bears a distinct design with portraits of heroes and historical figures, as well as symbols of resistance and war. The proceeds from the sale of these stamps will be used for the needs of the postal service. [?]
