Yesterday the Albanian public learned of the opposition leader's statement before the court. Fatos Nano, before being questioned by the judge, made a statement before the court panel. Because of the nature of the new circumstances dictated by the investigative process concerning the criminal accusation made against me, for the first time I am giving before the court a public written statement, as well as official, reasoned explanations about the entire political, anti-constitutional and inhumane frame-up. Because of the continued disregard for my requests and those of the defense lawyers regarding the clarification of the truth, I am presenting to the judge a clear and final position, which will serve not only for my own trial, but also for judging the system itself that is using justice against the opposition. Nano stressed that in this process the most elementary norms of the rule of law have been violated and that he does not accept being the object of a procedure aimed at his political discrediting and that of the Socialist Party. He said that responsibility for this process lies with the political structures that encouraged and directed it, while public opinion is becoming more and more convinced every day of its political nature.
