PD QUALIFICATIONS - FORMER ONES FOR FATOS NANO ARE SICKENING

In the court panel’s decision, the mechanism of slander and manipulation of public opinion by the state police and the prosecutor’s office has been exposed. In this decision, the court has dismissed as untrue the accusations and the labels used against Fatos Nano. In particular, the court assessed that the terms used against him were unfounded, hasty, and political in nature. This shows that the entire process was built on motives that were not legal, but rather on pressure and political struggle. As emerges from the examination of the case, there is no convincing evidence to support the accusations made. The documents presented are not sufficient to establish personal responsibility. On the contrary, they contain inconsistencies and one-sided interpretations. The decision stresses that Fatos Nano was unjustly drawn into a scheme of accusations aimed at his public and political discrediting. The court panel found that many of the claims by the investigating bodies are not supported by facts. For the Socialist Party and for public opinion, this decision is significant, because it proves that unlawful means and denigrating labels were used against political opponents. If justice functions independently and without interference, such cases cannot be repeated. The Fatos Nano case remains a test for the democratic system and for the respect of human rights. High temperatures in the government cabinet

Prime Minister Aleksandër Meksi and the government cabinet are facing growing political and social tensions, while the country is confronted with economic difficulties and increasing dissatisfaction. According to political sources, disagreements within the cabinet have become more visible over issues related to privatization, public administration, and the management of day-to-day crises. In some government circles, talk is of possible changes and reshuffling. The rise in political temperature comes at a time when the opposition is increasing its criticism and when the public is being shown ever more clearly the consequences of decisions taken without broad consultation. Although the government officially maintains a calm tone, signs of fatigue and division are not lacking. Recent decisions have sparked debate in parliament and in the media. If the situation worsens, the government cabinet could enter a new phase of political clashes. Continued on page 5

“I am and remain a member of the Socialist Party”

After the condemnation by the PD, the leader of the “fatosists” M. Bleri: “To this day I have been a member of the PS, and it has never even crossed my mind to leave it.” M. Bleri declares that political labels and the pressure exerted on him will not move him away from his political convictions. He says that his position is unchanged and that he remains part of the Socialist Party. According to him, the attacks carried out against the “fatosists” aim to divide and intimidate the membership, but they will not succeed. He calls for political debate to be conducted according to democratic norms and not through anathemas. He adds that the political movement within the left should be seen as an expression of a different opinion and not as a reason for exclusions or denigrating campaigns. Continued on page 5

Many issues of (futb) have now passed, while the weight has been to create a stable [?] and, if necessary, much waiting. Compared with 1992, there is no doubt that improvements have been made, but people expect changes more quickly and more deeply. In the agricultural and trade sectors some results have been recorded; however, difficulties in supply, prices, and the market for products remain significant. Farmers are asking for more support, roads, credit, and solutions for selling their products. In the city and in the countryside there are signs of better work and organization, but unemployment, poverty, and the lack of investment still affect daily life. Residents of the area believe that the pace of transformation should be faster and that the local administration should be closer to their concerns. B. 2
