The U.S. case, which has also been extensively covered by part of the Albanian press, created an extremely tense atmosphere in the northern city yesterday. For the first time since the scandal broke, the wider public was made aware that it appears not to be a simple ordinary smuggling affair, but a more complex story with many dimensions. For the first time, the names of Minister Adyl Xhaja, MP Ali Spahia, the chairman of the Shkodër district council Ali Kazazi, as well as the President of the Republic and the Council of Ministers, were openly and almost officially mentioned. According to various sources, some of those implicated claim that they acted with knowledge of, or even with the approval of, certain segments of power. In their testimonies, the arrested individuals have persistently mentioned the names of well-known state officials and local authorities. Yesterday one of the defendants, in the courtroom, stated that part of the fuel was taken by the police. This statement caused strong reactions and surprise.
