MANIPULATED SENTENCE The sentencing of Fatos Nano without taking into account any evidence of guilt that fully exonerates him shows that Albania still keeps its eyes turned to God and may condition the freedom of the individual in our democracy and prevent us from taking shelter in the bosom of opposition politics, as shelters have been placed in the bosom of the authorities. CHRONICLE Yesterday, at midday, the plenary session of the Court of Cassation decided to uphold the ruling issued by the Court of Appeal, sentencing the chairman of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, to 12 years of deprivation of liberty. The defense lawyer stated that this decision violated the procedures and the Constitution of the Republic of Albania. He pointed out that such decisions deal a serious blow to democracy. Cassation also decided to reject the defense's request to suspend the execution of the judgment. After the decision was announced, the bench and the prosecutors left under heavy security measures. Many citizens had gathered outside the court, waiting with dissatisfaction for the outcome of the session. In statements to the press by representatives of the Socialist Party and the lawyers in the case, it was stressed that the trial had been political and prejudiced. Many observers considered this decision an indication of the lack of independence of the judiciary and of the direct influence of politics over it. In response this morning from the Socialist Party regarding the organization of the protest demonstration to be held in Tirana on the 29th at 8:00 p.m., a letter states that the police have allowed the rally to take place. In document no. 804, dated 27.07.1994, through which the police decision is communicated, it is stated that: “May 17 of the events with no. 1800, dated 27.07.1994 for the organization of the Socialist Party rally notified by the secretary general of the executive. The protest, mainly in support of the Socialist Party. These people judged that the court decision was political, anti-opposition and vindictive. In their words, they demanded the immediate release of Fatos Nano and respect for democratic norms. Today around 1 p.m., in the premises of the Socialist Party headquarters, an expanded meeting of the leadership was held, where the situation created after the Cassation decision was discussed. In statements to the press, it was said that the decision constitutes a serious act against political pluralism and that the opposition will respond with all democratic means. In the premises of the Socialist Party headquarters, immediately after the Cassation decision was announced, many leaders and supporters were present. Increased presence of law enforcement forces and unusual movement in the surrounding area were noted. After the end of the hearing, it was reported that the headquarters was kept under heavy surveillance, while entry and exit were being checked. Representatives of the PS described this situation as political pressure and an attempt to prevent the opposition's response.
