Television or inquisition?! - Interview with PS intervention. Namik Dokle - On Thursday and Friday, Albanian Television broadcast in several parts the long interview with the chairman of the Socialist Party, Mr. Fatos Nano. Instead of a calm and normal conversation between a journalist and an important figure in Albanian politics, what was presented was an edited, truncated, manipulated piece filled with tendentious comments. What should have been a television interview was turned into a kind of public trial, where the questions, the interventions and the manner of presentation aimed at the political discrediting of the person interviewed. The Socialist Party considers this an unacceptable act of political and propaganda pressure. In this way, public television, instead of respecting professional ethics, impartiality and the public’s right to accurate information, was used as a tool of a directed campaign against the opposition. Socialists demand that the way be opened for political dialogue and a round table of parties, where the country’s major problems can be discussed seriously and responsibly. Instead, the state is carrying out a kind of television inquisition against political opponents. The article further stresses that broadcasting the interview in interrupted form, with selected fragments and comments outside normal standards, harms not only the image of the interviewed person but also the credibility of public television itself. It calls for state media not to become a one-sided political platform, but to respect pluralism, ethics and freedom of speech. (Continues on page 5)
